To clear up misconceptions and eradicate stigmas associated with mental health, a group of students at Woodlawn School wrapped up an elective called ?Movies & Medicine? by producing a public service announcement that has won national attention. The video will have a place on the Mental Health America website in the coming weeks.

Senior Allie Nagelski, junior Sydney Bowman, sophomores Tyler Ganis, Ciara Conway, Clare MacDonald and freshmen Arianna Hoshino, Taylor Scott and Alivia Weddington were the brains behind the project.

In class, the students chose a movie or TV show with some kind of medical merit to it. These shows became the basis for classroom discussions as the students led the dialogue surrounding the medical aspects of their chosen show. Because many of the students chose films or shows predicated on mental health, the group decided to pursue the topic further. Following research that included panel discussions with local area professionals, the students developed a script and produced a message to address types of mental health illness and feelings and stigmas surrounding these illnesses.

Over the past year, the Town of Davidson has become dedicated to building awareness and exposing the realities of mental health concerns into its wellness initiative. In September 2012, a citizen-led group called Davidson Lifeline was formed to educate citizens about suicide prevention. The committee offers QPR ? Question, Persuade, Refer ? training to all Davidson citizens to educate them about signs and symptoms of suicide and give them necessary tools to aid someone at risk.
