My New SFWA Short Fiction Template 2.0 for Scrivener Is Now ...

Posted on 30 October 2012

I finally got around to taking the revisions I?ve made to my own short fiction template that I use within Scrivener, and updating the short fiction template that I produced more than a year ago. The original template was downloaded over 1,100 times! The new one is now available just in time for NaNoWriMo.

So, Scrivener users who want the 2.0 version of my short fiction template can download it here:

SFWA Short Fiction Template for Scrivener (150)

The template now includes an About This Template document that describes all of the features. But I?ve also included this information below, as well as instructions on how to install the template.

Who Can Use This Template

Anyone. I call it my ?SFWA Short Fiction Template? because most of the stories I submit are short fiction (officially, those pieces under 40,000 words) and they are submitted to SFWA qualifying markets. ??SFWA? stands for ?Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.? But you don?t have to be a member of SFWA or even a short story writer to use this template. The net result of the template itself is that it takes what you?ve written and produces a document in standard manuscript format without you having to fuss over the formatting. You can focus on writing your story.

Features of the 2.0 Version

Here is a list of features. This same list is included in the About This Template document in the template itself.

  1. Preset First Page Header document. The first page header document is designed to take the meta-data in your Scrivener document and generate an appropriate first page of your manuscript. In standard format, the first page of a short fiction manuscript contains information about the author (address, phone number, etc.), approximate word count of the story, and the title and byline of the piece. This template will fill in this information automatically from Scrivener?s metadata settings.
  2. Story Section. Into the story section goes your scenes, where the actual writing happens. You can organize this any way you like. The template uses separate scene documents to indicate the proper scene breaks within the compiled manuscript. If there is only one scene in your story, one one scene document is required.
  3. Research Folder. The research folder is a place-holder folder for any research notes and documents related to your story.
  4. Deleted Scenes. The Deleted Scenes folder is a place-holder for any scenes you decide to remove from your manuscript. I don?t like losing any work. Sometimes, there is a scene or paragraph that is well written, but just doesn?t work in the story. Instead of deleting it permanently, I?ll move it to the Deleted Scenes folder. It gives you a completed record of everything you wrote. And you never know, those things that you cut may prove useful in some future story.
  5. Critiques Folder. The Critiques folder is a place to store any critiques or comments you get from friends, fellow writers, work-shoppers, etc. I like having this all in one place, tied to the story in question. I also will copy positive reviews for stories I?ve published into this folder.
  6. Final Draft Checklist. This is a document with a list of things I check through each time I produce a draft of a story that I am sending out. Feel free to remove items from this list, or add your own.
  7. Work Log. Each day that I work on a story, I?ll add one line to my ?Work Log? file, indicating in a sentence what I did that day. It might be something like, ?Wrote 2 more scenes, 2,500 words.? Or something like, ?Spend evening editing scene 6 down to 550 words.? I like having a complete history of what I did on each piece and this Work Log is a simple way of maintaining that.

How To Install the Template

  1. Download the template.
  2. Unzip the downloaded file.
  3. Open Scrivener on your computer.
  4. From the Scrivener start screen, click the Options? button
  5. Select Import Templates?
  6. Choose the unzipped template file you just downloaded and then click the Import button.

After that you should be all set. To use the template, create a new project, select the Fiction category, and then choose the SFWA Short Fiction Template 2.0.

The usual disclaimer:?I made my best effort to test the template and make sure it doesn?t cause any problems. As busy as I am, I don?t have much time to support issues that arise with the template. If you find a problem, let me know about it, but I can?t make any promises as to being able to fix it in a timely manner. This is a go-at-your-own-risk proposition. That said, I?ve been using the template with no problems with Scrivener on my Mac.

If you believe... don't hold back! | North Dallas Gazette

I sat astride my banana seat bike in a parking lot and stared down a thirty foot strip of pavement. It was six inches wide and lined with rubber balls. I was nine years old and participating in a bicycle rodeo. The objective was to ride the entire length without hitting a single ball. The slightest bump would send them rolling.

Nearly a hundred kids had entered, and so far no one had done this event perfectly. Each contestant got three tries. The best hit only five balls, most hit dozens. I didn?t see the difficulty. It looked easy, and as it turned out, for me, it was. I did it on my first attempt. No one else was able to do it ? even with three tries. I was able to do it for the simple reason that I believed I could.

Decades later, riding my mountain bike, I attempted to ride a 20 foot length of six-inch board that was elevated 12 inches off the ground. I was lucky if I could complete the length one try in twenty. That measly 12 inches of doubt shattered my belief system. As Henry Ford said, ?If you think you can or you think you can?t, you?re right.?

We?ve seen sports stars whose belief system took them to the top of their game: Michael Jordan swooshing the net for a lifetime average of 30 points per game; Tiger Woods routinely sinking impossibly long putts of 50 feet or more; and Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield fence where he would hit a home run. What is their secret? Other than the thousands of hours of practice, which many lesser players also have, each of these men visualized what they wanted to achieve then allowed themselves to do it. Their belief put them ?in the zone.? When our belief is strong enough, we will succeed. Or as Buddha put it, ?We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.?

Is there something you believe you can do, but you?ve never tried? Many years ago I was president of my neighborhood association. Each month I had to give a brief speech that amounted to little more than giving announcements. Nevertheless, it made me extremely nervous and I clung to the lectern in a white-knuckle grip as I read my notes out loud.

During that time, I participated as a counselor to a group of teenagers attending a Hugh O?Brian Youth Foundation leadership seminar. The Saturday night dinner keynote speaker was entertaining and informative; she was also relaxed and clearly having fun. I remember thinking to myself, ?I can do that. I want to do that!? In those two succinct sentences I made a belief statement and a desire statement, both of which are necessary for success.

I genuinely believed that I could speak professionally because I had told many a good story across a dinner table, but at the same time I remembered how I felt speaking to the neighborhood association with a stomach full of butterflies. To combat those feelings I joined a Toastmasters club and learned what I didn?t know about public speaking.

It took me a year before I could break free of the lectern and my notes. Two years after that I started speaking professionally. I gave presentations on advertising which is the industry I?ve worked in most of my life, but more than anything I wanted to speak on innovation and creativity.

During my first year or two of speaking, I met a nationally known professional speaker. He asked me what topic I spoke on and I replied, ?Creativity.? He scoffed at that and said, ?There?s hundreds of guys speaking on that ? you need to find your own niche.? On that advice I developed some additional topics, but soon found that the presentation which led to the most recommendations was the one on creativity. What was the difference? It is a subject that I am passionate about. Creative thinking has improved my life time and time again, and it is my belief that it will help others. When I speak on it, I am in the zone.

Is there a business you believe you would be successful in? You would not be dreaming about it ? seeing yourself doing it ? if you didn?t believe you could! Michael Jordan didn?t become a basketball star without developing the skills he needed first. He took as many as 2000 practice shots a day to imprint those skills into his mental and physical circuitry. Perhaps all you need is practice.

If there is something you want to do, but haven?t tried, then break it down. What parts of the business do you believe you can do? What parts do you believe you can?t do? Do the parts you can do outweigh the ones you can?t? If yes, then you?re off to a good start, and the odds are in your favor. But if the opposite is true, don?t let that stop you. Belief must be supported by desire. If your desire is strong enough, you will gain the skills and subsequently the self-belief you need to succeed.

Once you?ve identified the parts you can?t do, ask yourself, ?Can I learn to do them?? If not, hire someone else who can. Perhaps you don?t even know which parts you don?t know. That?s OK; hire a consultant, or talk with someone who has already succeeded at this or a similar business. Delegating what you can?t do, frees up your belief system and enables you to focus on what you can.

When you believe you can do something ? you don?t really think about it ? you just do it. It?s the thinking about it that sometimes holds you back. According to David Eagleman, in his book Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, if you?re getting trounced in tennis, ask your opponent how they are able to serve so well. He says that will cause them to start thinking about how it is done to the point that they won?t be able to do it anymore. Are you over-thinking your desire?

In my research of creative thinkers and innovators, the one trait I found that was nearly universal among them was the belief that they will succeed. They believe they will be able to create whatever it is they have set out to create. They believe they will be able to solve the problem they are facing. Thomas Edison may have expressed it best, ?I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.?

What are you waiting for ? if you believe you?ll succeed ? you will. Go for it!

(AP) ? JPMorgan Chase, the country's biggest bank, reported a record quarterly profit Friday, helped by a surge in mortgage refinancing. CEO Jamie Dimon said he believed the housing market "has turned a corner."

The bank made $5.3 billion from July through September, up 36 percent from the same period a year ago. It worked out to $1.40 per share, blowing away the $1.21 predicted by analysts polled by FactSet, a provider of financial data.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $25.9 billion, beating expectations of $24.4 billion. Earnings were also helped because the bank set aside less money for bad loans ? $1.8 billion, down 26 percent from a year ago.

Revenue from mortgage loans shot up 29 percent. About three-quarters of that was from people refinancing, rather than buying new homes. Low interest rates and government help encouraged homeowners to refinance.

A Federal Reserve survey earlier this week found that a stronger housing market helped economic growth in almost every part of the country. Home sales are up, prices are rising more consistently in most places, and builders are more confident.

Dimon noted that the bank was still seeing a high level of souring mortgage loans, and said he expects high default-related expenses "for a while longer." And he noted homeowners are still struggling under mortgages they can't afford, saying the bank was working to modify those loans.

The bank gave few details on the surprise $6 billion trading loss that dominated its previous earnings report. It did mention that a credit portfolio moved to the investment bank from the chief investment office, which was responsible for the bad trade, "experienced a modest loss."

The bank set aside an extra $684 million for legal expenses. Chief financial officer Doug Braunstein said the reserves were related to "a variety of issues," and not just a lawsuit filed last week by the New York attorney general over mortgage-backed securities sold by Bear Stearns. JPMorgan bought Bear Stearns as it veered toward collapse in 2008.

Dimon said he couldn't predict how much the bank would have to spend in the future.

"Obviously we're in a litigious society," he said on a call with reporters. "We have a lot of mortgage suits coming and others. ... Hopefully it will come down over time but we can't promise you that."

The number of employees was up about 1 percent over the year. But it fell about 1 percent compared with the previous quarter. The bank shed about 3,300 jobs to 259,550.

Dimon said he believed the number of workers would continue to come down, partly because the bank will need fewer people to handle problem mortgages but also because the company would continue to look for efficiencies.

He declined to give specifics on how bonus season might play out early next year. "The company's doing quite well, and we want to pay our people fairly and properly as we always have," he said.

Dimon also declined to answer a question about what the board of directors might decide about his own pay. Some had speculated it would be cut because of the trading scandal.

"I would never tell you what our board of directors does, OK?" Dimon said. He was paid $23 million last year, mostly in stock awards.

JPMorgan's investment banking unit earned more in fees for underwriting stock offerings and debt offerings, which could signal that wary companies and investors are more willing to get back into the market.

Debit card revenue fell, which the bank attributed to new rules crimping the fees that banks charge stores whenever customers pay via debit card.

JPMorgan stock was down 22 cents in premarket trading at $41.88. The stock was as low as $31 in early June, after the bank announced the trading loss, which later ballooned to $6 billion.

The bank's revenue was slightly lower, $25.1 billion, when adjusted for a controversial accounting rule that penalizes banks when the bonds they issue to investors look safer and rise in value.

The theory behind the rule, in place since 2007, is that it would cost banks more to buy those bonds back from investors. The rule has been sharply criticized by the banking industry, including by Dimon, and could be phased out as early as next year.

Apple?s iPad Mini Event Likely Happening October 23

ipad-miniApple's iPad mini event was rumored to be happening sometime around October 17, but this week brought no invite. Now, however, there's a very good sign that we could see it on October 23, thanks to a report from AllThingsD and a confirmation from one of the best-connected bloggers in the Apple ecosystem.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini pops up, we go hands-on (video)

STUB Samsung Galaxy S III mini hands on born in Frankfurt

When word first started trickling out that Samsung planned to make a mini version of the Galaxy S III, it had the air of plausibility -- we've heard from many a person about the too-large size of that phone for their hands. Then, a press invitation confirmed that "something small" was in the works, and finally mobile chief JK Shin confirmed that a smartphone of that name would be announced today in Frankfurt, Germany.

Now Samsung's spilled all the beans, and revealed the new Galaxy S III mini, a slightly paler version of its bigger brother in specs as well as screen size. Our own short time with the phone certainly revealed that its pushing all the same "inspired by nature" buttons of the original Galaxy S III (and the Galaxy Note II), with the same exact rounded pebble shape and layout. The German marketing rep we spoke to said his company's research found that users wanted the same phone design as the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III, but in a smaller form factor -- to more easily fit smaller hands and pockets. Samsung said those folks don't necessarily need or want the most powerful phone they can get their hands on and are content to have mid-level specs -- so the mini carries a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 4-inch, WVGA AMOLED screen and 32GB max of memory.

It remains to be seen if those specs will dilute the Galaxy S brand, but in any event, we found the phone certainly doesn't cramp our regular-sized hands like its older brother can (let alone the Note II), and the comfortable shape of the original works even better in a mini size. The button placement is identical to the larger handset, and the phone will come out of the box with nearly identical Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean functionality -- with the added Samsung TouchWiz twist, of course. That includes new niceties like the multi-screen option, and a brief play with the phone shows the same butter factor, even with the lesser dual-core processor. So might this mini-me Galaxy S III model sway you over to the Samsung Galaxy family if you disdain the giant screen of its predecessor? Check out the gallery below to see how the size compares with the rest of the family, and a hands-on video and interview with Samsung Germany rep Mario Winter, both after the break.

NTT DoCoMo unveils winter lineup, pushes big displays, LTE, quad-cores and NFC payments

NTT DoCoMo unveils winter collection big displays, LTE, quadcores and NFC payments are all so chica

Just as the air begins to chill, NTT DoCoMo has announced its forthcoming line-up for release in November and December, including nine smartphones, four feature phones and a tablet. As the Japanese populace would no doubt demand, all of the bigger smartphones -- from the 4.7-inch Arrows V F-04E through to the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II -- come with 1,280 x 720 displays, a healthy degree of water- and dust-proofing, plus decent quad-core credentials. The new Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E stands out for its low-power 4.9-inch IGZO panel and 16-megapixel camera, while the Arrows Tab F-05E 10-inch tablet packs a 1,980 x 1200 display and what sounds like the latest 1.7GHz iteration of Tegra 3 (as seen in the HTC One X+). It's also interesting to a see a Korean-style variant of the Galaxy S III (the Alpha SC-03E) packing a souped-up 1.6GHz Exynos chip and 2GB RAM. In related news, NTT has also announced that it's parterning with Mastercard PayPass and will offer the contactless payment system for Japanese customers travelling abroad by fall next year -- and indeed all the new smartphones are NFC-equipped. Global Strategies: Report of the Education Funding Team

Governor Kitzhaber?s education budget proposals for the 2013 legislative session are beginning to emerge. The report of the Education Funding Team, presented above and available online here, is out. It puts no dollar numbers by its proposals, but it does set out the categories it wants considered. In particular, it sets four categories of strategic investments. And unfortunately, nowhere in the document are the priorities of this blog (more foreign language immersion programs, paid high school study abroad programs, and more online educational options) promoted. The investments proposed would, for the most part, continue to propel Oregon?s education system down the wrong track. What a waste of political effort!

The proposed strategic investments are:

Regional ?Student Achievement Centers? to develop a representative corps of professional educators

?OregonReads?, a statewide campaign focused on early grade reading

Support for evidence-based programs that engage and empower parents and students

Innovative models for grades 9-14 to ensure essential skills for global success

Of the ?strategic investments? the report says:

?Strategic Investments.? Funding that the state allocates in order to achieve particular, high-leverage processes and outcomes. These investments should represent a small percentage of the overall state investment for education, but are preconditions to large-scale, enduring system improvement. Without them, we should not believe that the education system in 2015 will serve students any more effectively today than in the future. These are two to six-year investments.

Perhaps more on some of the specific investment proposals and opportunities in future posts. For now, these proposals are a disappointment, although expected, and not bold enough to meet the realities before us.

With wife expecting, Stephan Bonnar ready to jump on private jet after UFC 153

Though Stephan Bonnar has UFC 153 and Anderson Silva on his mind, he has another concern when he's in Brazil this week. Bonnar's wife Andrea is pregnant and due at the end of the month. Since babies are born on their own schedule and not the UFC's, Bonnar has a contingency plan ready to go for the event Andrea goes into labor earlier than expected.

According to TMZ, UFC president Dana White has offered to fly Bonnar back to his home in Las Vegas immediately after the fight with Silva in his private jet. Bonnar took White up on his offer, but the Bonnars still have another plan in place.

Andrea says Stephan?plans to video conference in to his wife's birth if he can't make it in time -- but she adds, "We're trying to avoid even thinking about that."

Their son's birth will be forever connected to Bonnar's last-minute fight with Silva. After featherweight champion Jose Aldo's injury threatened UFC 153, Bonnar stepped up to fight Silva, the middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king at light heavyweight.

There is a chance their son will be connected to Bonnar's most famous fight, as well. As Kevin Iole mentioned, Stephan and Andrea are considering naming their son Griffin Bonnar in honor of the Bonnar-Forrest Griffin bout at the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale.
