CORRECTS SPELLING OF NAME Six-year-old Lori Anne Madison, of Woodbridge, Va., the youngest contestant in the history of the National Spelling Bee, reaches for the microphone during the second round, Wednesday, May 30, 2012, in Oxon Hill, Md. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? The youngest speller in National Spelling Bee history said Thursday that she knew the word she misspelled during the competition, but she was too tired, bored and stressed out to concentrate when she stepped to the microphone.

Six-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va., fell four points short of making the semifinals at the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee. If she had spelled "ingluvies" correctly during Wednesday's preliminary rounds ? she began the word with an "e'' ? and gotten one more word correct on a computer test, she would have achieved a qualifying score.

"I was really disappointed that I misspelled the word. I knew the word," Lori Anne said Thursday. "It was just too bad that I misspelled the word."

Admittedly overwhelmed by the media attention, the home-schooled prodigy held court with reporters for 25 minutes Thursday morning. Although she wasn't always forthcoming with her answers, making clear she'd rather be outside playing with her friends. Her blue eyes lit up when talking about her experience at a barbecue on Monday.

"I blew some absolutely huge bubbles, like this big!" she said, holding her hands a foot apart and reminding everyone of her age.

Waiting for her turn to spell wasn't so much fun. She hadn't gotten enough sleep and came close to nodding off, and the hour-and-a-half wait "seemed like two millennia," she said.

"I was just stressed. It was a really, really long wait," Lori Anne said. "Overall, it was just boring. Really boring! Really boring!"

She did enjoy interacting with the other spellers ? many of whom are more than twice her age and twice her size ? and she gets a thrill out of hearing a word she knows and spelling it correctly. She pledged to return next year.

"I just love spelling, so I'm really excited to go to next year's bee ? if I go, which is probably going to be a yes," she said.

The news conference was at times awkward, with Lori Anne squirming in her chair when asked to talk about her hobbies and the interesting people she's met this week. She fielded a question from a Finnish reporter about how to improve the popular online game Angry Birds, which was developed in Finland.

"If anything, they should add some more birds," Lori Anne said.

She also subjected spelling bee director Paige Kimble, who won the bee in 1981 by spelling "sarcophagus," to some good-natured ribbing.

"When you won, the words were much easier," Lori Anne said. "Someone won on 'therapy.' I mean, come on!"

Incredible Hulk Anatomy

Like millions of other superhero comic fans, I loved Joss Whedon?s & Marvel?s The Avengers when I saw it (in 2D) opening weekend. Motion-captured Mark Ruffalo turned in the most incredible version of the Hulk we?ve seen yet on the screen. ?Squeeing and cheering, it reminded me of a drawing I had made back ?in 2002. ?I drew this fan art of Marvel Comics? Incredible Hulk, dissected and analyzed. Here it is with a new lick of paint.

Hulk ? Marvel Comics. This fan art has moral ? Glendon Mellow. Share under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License..

At the time, I tried to draw on not only my mother?s nursing school anatomy textbooks, but also gorilla and hominid ancestor skulls (such as Paranthropus, though my murky text ?identitifies it with the outdated Zinjanthropus name), inspiration for things like the cranial ridge and large jaw muscles. I included details such as 3 scars on the bone (I?m Canadian: Wolverine wrecked his face a few times and I wanted to document that) and perfect glowing teeth. If anyone has perfect shiny teeth, it needs to be Hulk.

The science and geekery site io9.com recently listed 10 Science Concepts that Could Spawn Awesome Supervillains (by Esther Ingliss-Arkell). Established characters borne of exaggerated real world scientific causes could probably use science-inspired revisions too. ?Can?t wait to get my hands on The Art of Marvels The Avengers to see what scientific concepts the pros who designed the movie concept art came up with.

Professor Foster: "We now need to define the role this protein is playing in prostate cancer"

Scientists at the University have discovered a protein, only present in prostate cancer cells, that could be used as a marker to detect early signs of the disease.?? ??

Published in the British Journal of Cancer, the research examines a unique sequence of a gene that produces a protein in prostate cancer cells, which may be linked to aggressive forms of the disease.? The findings could contribute to future drug development programmes for those patients who are currently untreatable.?

Professor Chris Foster, from the University?s Institute of Translational Medicine, had previously shown that the gene, called PRKCZ, controls the aggressive behaviour of prostate cancer cells.? He has now discovered that this gene changes its expression in prostate cancer cells and produces a protein that could be responsible for changing the behaviour of the cells.? This means that the protein could be used as a potential marker for the disease, indicating which patients are at risk?of developing a more aggressive type of cancer.

Reducing effect of cancer cells

Professor Foster said: ?We know that the protein produced by the altered gene contains a unique active region. We now need to define the role that this protein is playing in prostate cancer. If it encourages aggressiveness in prostate cancers then we may be able to develop new drugs that reduce its effects in the cancer cells.?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Each year approximately 40,800 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK and around 10,700 die from the disease. The findings of this study may provide a biological approach to treating men with aggressive forms of prostate cancer and for whom no specific therapy is currently available.

The study is supported by Cancer Research UK and the North West Cancer Research Fund.

Benefits Of Drinking Wine For 2010 | wines and spirits blog

Posted by admin - May 30th, 2012

It may sound strange but you may ask why more people should drink wine? You may disagree with this statement but there are chances that you will change you mind after reading this article. Just to let you know, I always used to disagree with this statement until I discovered a profound truth. Would you like to know what it is? Do you want to know why more people really should drink wine?

Wine has its own benefits. Most of these benefits go unknown to the common person. The common person just drinks to satisfaction and to unwind. The list of benefits as discovered by experts is growing bigger by the day and more incredible too! There are some know facts about wine and they are drinking wine moderately can help you lose weight, reduce forgetfulness, and boost your immunity and help prevent bone loss! How can a beverage that is so destructive to the human society be a boon to health? I will tell you the key a little later on in the following article.

Therefore, here is the deal. Let us find out why more people should drink wine, right away. Wine may sustain your memory. If you?ve had experiences with drunken people, you would not believe this affirmation. Nevertheless, it?s true and there?s a catch right in the statement.

Lose weight. There is a approach to follow to lose weight. If you start drinking wine by the bottles instead of the glass, the only thing you will lose is your head not your weight. The key here is not to drink heavily. Reports have revealed that people who drink wine regularly have smaller waists and less fat in the abdominal region.

Strengthen your immune system. Wine is a great source of antioxidants when enjoyed in small consistent servings. Studies conducted in Britain and Spain has proved that a little alcohol can guard against the risk of food poisoning and that the risk of infection to certain bacteria and viruses reduces. Don?t take this literally. Though the benefits are there, don?t overdo it.

Build bone mass. ?Want to put on weight? Drink wine.? This is untrue. While wine has been proved to build stronger bones, it cannot be used to gain weight.

Wine must never be taken in big doses. If you scroll back up, you will notice that I?ve used words like moderately, little, not overdo, etc. The reason why more people should drink wine is for their own health benefits. Just remember, wine is addictive and having wine parties can get out of hand. If it becomes an addiction, it no longer poses health benefits; in fact, the health benefits turn to health risks. So, make your choice ? wisely. Drink only in moderation. If you decide that are ready to discover the benefits of wine then good wine furniture and wine cabinets will be a necessity. Always research and look at all the options before you make a final decision.

About the Author

Great wine should be enjoyed all the time, not just in fine restaurants. So get a set of wine cabinets for your home or kitchen and start enjoying the benefits of wine today.

'The Unadoptables': The Pet Collective's YouTube Channel Addresses Adoption (VIDEO)

This Romeo's story just may have a happier ending than the Shakespearian version.

Romeo, a fluffy maltese mix, was found laying by the side of a fellow dog, Juliet, after she was hit by a car. Juliet died on the way to the hospital, but Romeo survived, and was left in need of a loving home.

This story is told in "The Unadoptables," a series from FremantleMedia's new YouTube channel, The Pet Collective. The channel consists of seven original, short-form animal series, produced by the company behind "American Idol."

In the video above featuring Romeo, Baldwin Park Animal Care Center caregiver Isha Willits explained, "He lost his Juliet, so we called him Romeo."

Although their facility is large, Willits explained in the video that sick, suffering and aggressive dogs are often euthanized because "we don't have all the space in the world; we don't have all the resources to walk these dogs every day and keep them happy, and they don't deserve to be in a cage forever."

As a public shelter, LA Departament of Animal Care and Control's Evelina Villa explained to HuffPost, "We don't have the luxury of saying, 'no, we're full'" and the numbers add up. They're currently in the midst of "kitten season," receiving litters of kittens nearly every day.

Villa estimates that over 23,340 animals on average enter the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center every year, including dogs, cats, rabbits and other domestic animals.

The shelter takes in strays, gather animals roaming the streets, and accepts pets surrendered by people who can no longer care for them, including families who can't afford the pet, are having a baby or are moving.

Isha Willits told HuffPost that one problem is that pet owners don't educate themselves about the animal before taking it in, and an active pet may not fit the owner's lifestyle.

Another issue is trendy pets. They receive animals made popular in a movie, near Halloween they get black cats, and Christmastime sees a lot of puppies. Willits said a gift recipient should be aware they are receiving a pet before anyone purchases it as a gift.

Michelle Davis, supervising producer at The Pet Collective, told HuffPost that "The Unadoptables" is a look at pets that tend to be difficult for shelters to adopt out. "Unadoptables" looks at animals with special needs, black cats, inseparable pairs and pets that are old or considered unattractive.

Davis said she never realized the enormity of the animal overpopulation problem until she began working on the series. Although her team debated working with just no-kill shelters, Davis argued that everyone has the same goal of helping animals, despite the major challenge posed by a lack of resources and support.

Even if pets like Romeo featured on The Pet Collective end up getting adopted, for every Romeo, Davis said there are "thousands more" that need a home.

Davis recommended responsible ownership, which includes maintaining good health (obesity is a growing problem among animals), microchipping pets so they can be returned if lost, and spay/neutering all pets.

Villa echoed Davis, declaring spay/neutering pets as the top priority. She said just this one act would greatly improve the overpopulation crisis facing shelters right now.

To learn more about helping animals in the featured shelter, visit AnimalCare.LAcounty.gov or the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center Facebook page. According to Willits, they are always looking for more volunteers to help at adoption events, and walk and train the dogs. If you want to adopt a pet in need, you can also visit your local shelter or check out Petfinder.com and the ASPCA website to learn more.

Be sure to check out more from The Pet Collective Channel on Facebook and Twitter.

Danish police arrest 2 men in terror plot

(AP) ? Two Danish brothers originally from Somalia were arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack, Denmark's security service said Tuesday.

The two brothers, ages 18 and 23, were arrested late Monday ? one in the western city of Aarhus and the other as he arrived by plane at Copenhagen's international airport, said the Danish Security and Intelligence Service, or PET.

The men were suspected of "being in the process of preparing an act of terror" after they were overheard talking about methods, targets and different weapons types, PET said in a statement, suggesting the suspects had been under surveillance. One of them had been to a training camp in Somalia run by the Islamist militant group al-Shabab, the agency said. The Somalia-based al-Shabab has links to al-Qaida.

The suspects are "Danish citizens of Somali origin" who have lived in Denmark for 16 years, PET said.

"According to PET's assessment the arrests have prevented a concrete act of terror, and the arrests therefore don't lead to a changed evaluation of the terror threat in Denmark," PET said, adding that the terror threat level in Denmark remains "serious."

The Scandinavian country has been in the crosshairs of Islamist terror groups after the publication of newspaper cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.

A Somali man living in Denmark was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 10 years in prison after breaking into the home of one of the cartoonists with an ax in 2010.

Last year, a Chechen-born man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for preparing a letter bomb that exploded as he was assembling it in a Copenhagen hotel in 2010.

Another trial is under way in Denmark against four men accused of plotting a shooting spree at another Danish newspaper.

Content Marketing Success 300x236 5 Steps to Achieve Content Marketing Success [Slides]#ContentMarketing: The Hottest Marketing Buzzword of 2012

Why? Because as consumers are tuning out marketing messages at all stages of the buying process, conversion rates are starting to plummet.

And the cost per lead of many marketing programs is starting to soar. This is all at a time when marketing budgets are feeling the strain of sales? expectations that marketing will produce more leads and better leads. So marketing leaders, marketers with a clue and the host of consultants and agencies are all talking about how to attract new customers with content.

In a perfect example of content marketing itself, Rebecca Lieb (@lieblink) with support from Jeremiah Owyang (@jowyang) from Altimeter have delivered a Content Marketing ebook, webcast, blog post, book and slideshare presentation on what they call ?The New Marketing Equation. Why Organizations Must Rebalance.?

In this post, I will highlight the key points Rebecca and Jeremiah present and define the 5 steps to achieve content marketing success. I also have embedded the slides from their powerpoint for your own review.

Shifting from Push to Pull

We?re tuning out the noise. And not just some of us. The majority of internet users tune out advertising. Rebecca cited a Pew study that states that 77% of internet users never engage in online advertising.

So she interviewed 56 content experts at 38 companies, 19 brands and 23 service providers between October and December of 2011 to understand ho they are dealing with this seismic shift. And the answer was that marketers were realizing they needed to move from primarily push to primarily pull-marketing tactics.

But Shifting from push to pull is antithetical to corporate culture. You need new resources in staff, budgets and training. You need to differentiate between tools vs. strategy and you need to integrate your advertising into pull-marketing tactics.

How are marketers re-balancing to face these challenges?

Marketers need continual content initiatives that tell stories over time. This is putting new demands on marketing departments skills and resources.

There are new technologies that enables any brand to become like a publisher but with 178 average social media accounts, Jeremiah stated that we need to determine who will be enabled as publishers.

Rebecca believes that organizations that rebalance now will have a significant advantage. Marketing is shifting to storytelling and content. Consumers are expecting engaging content and marketers need to be able to deliver it.

Benefits of Content Marketing

Content marketing is the marketing of attraction. Attracting consumers means pulling them in when they are receptive to being pulled in. Sometimes this means education or even entertaining.

It builds stronger brands up and down the marketing funnel and well beyond the sale. Ultimately this is about lower cost of customer acquisition.

Content marketing starts with owned media delivering great content and then moves into earning customer attention.

It is longer term and it requires new storytelling skills and a solid content strategy. Content strategy may literally save marketing through an understanding of what, why and how you?re going to deploy 3 distinct types of content: entertaining content, educational content and utility content (like apps) that help customers.

5 Steps to Achieve Content Marketing Success

  1. Determine a content strategy leader with empowered authority who can work outside of marketing with customer-facing experts. Some companies have even named a ?Chief Content Officer:? a customer-centric marketer who also has multi-channel publishing experience.
  2. Identify other content roles such as editors, writers, designers, response managers, channel managers who are responsible for creating and disseminating content.
  3. Audit existing content. You cannot know where you are going until you know where you are. Determine what content by type, by segment and is it search-engine optimized. The key question is if the content is easily found (SEO) and if it is being used at all.
  4. Create an editorial calendar that maps out the content that is to be produced and when it will be published. It helps to inform content consumers what is coming and it helps the production process.
  5. Repeat, re-use and re-purpose your content into various formats and into all available channels. This extension is the best way to extract the highest level of value from content marketing costs.

How To Achieve Content Maturity?

Companies that do this well will be recognized as leaders in their field. They will be the sources where consumers turn for information and solution. They will have achieved ?trusted adviser? status and will have affinity for their solutions.

5 Stages of Content Maturity

  1. Curious and considering but not really doing anything.
  2. Advocacy and Experimentation usually occurs when a leader emerges and pushes the organization into content marketing.
  3. Strategy and Process: Identification of a Head of Content Strategt, such as Joe Chernov (@jchernov) at Eloqua, who can set clear objectives, process and measurable KPIs.
  4. Content Culture: The entire organization has a sense of the importance of content, an understanding of how to employ keyword research and how to deliver customer-focused stories.
  5. Monetizing Content: very few companies can achieve this state where marketing is a profit center. Content becomes monetized and a product of the company.

Top-Level Takeaways

  • Content Marketing is not free (same as social media!). Content can be much more cost-effective than outbound efforts like trade shows and advertising.
  • Content marketing requires significant cultural change in the traditional marketing organization
  • Content and advertising should be integrated within existing channels
  • Content Marketing will permeate organizations (not just marketing)

Egypt to pick Islamist or military man as president

CAIRO | Fri May 25, 2012 5:08pm EDT

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians must choose between a Muslim Brother or an ex-military man in a presidential run-off that highlights the stark rifts in a nation united in euphoria when Hosni Mubarak fell 15 months ago, first-round results indicated on Friday.

With most votes counted, the Muslim Brotherhood said its candidate Mohamed Mursi had topped this week's polls and would compete in next month's second round with former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, who served as Mubarak's last prime minister.

The election marks a crucial step in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy, overseen by a military council that has pledged to hand power to a new president by July 1.

More turbulence could follow if Shafiq is elected and his foes have already vowed to take to the streets if that happens.

A victory for Mursi could worsen tensions between resurgent Islamists and the army, self-appointed guardian of the state.

Official results are due on Tuesday, but a senior judge involved in supervising the vote said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, based on figures from 90 percent of polling stations.

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy came third, he said. The Brotherhood put Sabahy fourth behind another Islamist, Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, in a close race in which Mursi won 25 percent of votes.

A member of Shafiq's campaign also said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, but that counting was not complete.

The election has split Egyptians between those who oppose an effective return to the Mubarak era and those who fear an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions.

The run-off will be held on June 16 and 17.

"Now Egyptians will have to choose between the revolution and the counter-revolution," Mohamed Beltagy, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party, told Reuters.

UNCOMFORTABLE CHOICE

But Islamists were slow to join the revolt against Mubarak and some of the youth who were at its forefront were aghast at the outcome of the first round and the choice they now face.

Tareq Farouq, 34, a Cairo driver, said: "I'm in shock. How could this happen? The people don't want Mursi or Shafiq. We're sick of both. They are driving people back to Tahrir Square."

Christians and secular liberals anxious about personal freedoms - and the fate of Egypt's vital tourist industry - will fret about a promised Brotherhood push for Islamic law.

But Shafiq's supporters believe his military background and government experience make him the man to restore order and stability so that the battered economy can revive.

"People voted for Shafiq for his honesty and clarity which people are craving for. They believed him when he said Egypt is for everyone," said Karim Salem, a Shafiq campaign aide.

If Mursi becomes president, Islamists will control most ruling institutions - but not the military - in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, consolidating electoral gains made by fellow-Islamists in other Arab countries in the past year.

Israel has nervously watched the Islamists' rise, especially in Egypt, its old enemy until a 1979 peace treaty. Mursi vaguely advocates a "review" of the pact, but the Brotherhood says it will not tear it up. Shafiq has vowed to uphold it.

The bluntly spoken military man came from behind in a race in which former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and ex-Brotherhood member Abol Fotouh were early favorites.

His late surge reflected the anxiety of many Egyptians about a breakdown of law and order and the often violent political disputes that have punctuated an army-led transition since a popular revolt ousted Mubarak on February 11, 2011.

Egypt will elect a president before writing a post-Mubarak constitution to define the powers of the head of state, parliament and other institutions. The army, bent on preserving its privileges and influence even after the promised handover, might want to curb the mandate of an Islamist president.

STRATEGY FOR ROUND TWO

The Brotherhood's Guidance Office, its top body, met to mull a campaign "to galvanize Islamists and Egyptian voters to face the bloc of the 'feloul'", a Brotherhood official said, using a scornful Arabic term for "remnants" of Mubarak's order.

In an attempt to rally the support around Mursi's bid, the Brotherhood invited leading politicians, including some of those knocked out of the presidential race, to talks to "save the revolution".

The invitee list included Abol Fotouh and Sabahy, said Yasser Ali, a senior official in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, who added that the agenda would include the position of vice president and a future coalition government.

The Brotherhood, Egypt's most organized political group, has already secured the biggest bloc for its party in parliament after an earlier vote. Long repressed and banned under Mubarak, the 84-year-old Islamist group has a broad grassroots base.

Many Christians, who form about a tenth of Egypt's 82 million people, complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.

Losing Islamist candidate Abol Fotouh, who won 20 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, said in a statement he would now back the Islamist group, even though it expelled him last year for standing for president against its wishes.

Abol Fotouh did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression", referring to Shafiq.

The votes of Sabahy, the leftist, could also help swing a run-off between Mursi and Shafiq.

Elijah Zarwan at the European Council on Foreign Relations in London said the outcome was "perhaps the most polarizing and therefore dangerous result possible" and could spark unrest.

"But those who fear the destabilizing effects of sustained Islamist-military confrontation can take some comfort in that neither side has an interest in such a prolonged conflict."

Two days of first-round voting went off calmly with polls closing on Thursday. Monitors reported no major infringements, although some candidates grumbled about their rivals' conduct.

The Brotherhood official, who asked not to be named, said that with votes counted from about 12,800 of the roughly 13,100 polling stations, Mursi had 25 percent, Shafiq 23 percent, Abol Fotouh 20 percent and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy 19 percent. Moussa limped in with just 10 percent.

Election committee officials said late on Thursday that about half of Egypt's 50 million eligible voters had cast ballots. The Brotherhood official put the turnout at 40 percent.

strategic planning consultant More Details about strategic planning consultant here.

The most effective solution that most have arrived on when their business had hit a slump is to hire a strategic planning consultant. Every business reaches a point where you - as the boss - are unsure how to further expand anymore. Don't be alarmed with this because even the biggest names out there have hit this snag and pondered on about how to remedy it.

Yes we know, you probably are doubtful of hiring somebody to come up with new angles because how could they? You yourself haven't found the solution so why would you feel like someone else could? The truth is that we - being human - are fixated on our personal facts. For example: If there was a light inside a room that was a little too dim for the area, an electrician would simply advice you to change the bulb to higher voltage. Whist if you ask an artist about his opinion on the matter, he would tell you to darken the walls as to make the light more prominent and illuminating.

Now having a strategic planning consultant to help you see a new light to your business is very helpful. And believe it or not, the biggest companies out there have teams - not one but many - who do these calculations and risk factoring on the shared goal of improving the company.

If you feel like you've hit a snag in your business venture then having someone there to help you progress is never a bad idea. You should seriously consider this option if ever you wish to further maximize the business potential that your company has.

So what exactly is their job? From the word 'consultant' you might get the idea already. They are not there to change your mind on a certain decision you've made. Their only job is to explain the different pros and cons to the choice you have made. But remember that it's YOUR company and a strategic planning consultant is simply there to help - not judge or tell you what to do.

Toronto ends MLS-record 9-game losing streak

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:36 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto FC ended its MLS record nine-game losing streak to open a season with a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on a late goal by Danny Koevermans on Saturday.

Nick Soolsma outmuscled a Union defender in the box and fed the ball to Koevermans at the near post. The big Dutch striker's first attempt bounced off goalie Chris Konopka, but he scored on with his second try.

"It's a big relief," said Toronto FC coach Aron Winter. "Finally, other questions for you all."

Koevermans came into the game in the 62nd minute, his third substitute appearances in four games since returning from a groin injury.

Toronto entered the game off a win against the Vancouver Whitecaps that game the club a fourth straight Voyageurs Cup as Canadian champion. Toronto has a three-week break due to the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

"I'm extremely disappointed with our performance," said Union coach Peter Nowak. "We had a couple of good games where we played the way we wanted to play and today was completely opposite. Two steps forward and three steps back."

Philadelphia played without goalie Zac MacMath (concussion symptoms) and Chase Harrison (ankle sprain). Konopka filled in well in his first action of the season, until the end.

"I know the first half wasn't really going our way but at the end of the day we let in a goal in the 88th minute," he said. "When it gets that deep in the game you try any way you can to grind out a result. It's frustrating that we didn't get to do that today."

Toronto is 1-9-0; Philadelphia is 2-7-2.

Smart bullet ready to leave the lab, hit target more than 1 mile away

1 hr.

A laser-guided smart bullet that uses tiny fins to steer as is screams through the air is almost ready for prime time, be it a battlefield or a high-mountain deer hunt.

The bullet is under development at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, where it was thought up by a pair of engineers there who spend a chunk of their free time out hunting.

The four-inch-long projectile is reported to improve long-distance marksmanship by about 98 percent, at a distance between 1 and 2 kilometers.

To do so, an optical sensor in the bullet?s nose detects a laser beam shining on a distant target. The sensor sends information to guidance and control electronics that steer tiny fins that guide the bullet to the target.

Word of the smart bullet?s development first surfaced in January. Today, IEEE Spectrum reports that Sandia is wrapping up prototype tests and actively seeking a commercial partner to turn out field-ready bullets.

Larry Shippers, manager of systems technology at Sandia, told IEEE that the technology has already proven skeptics wrong ? the battery and chip survive being fired out of a .50-caliber rifle.

?Launch tests found that the monition?s innards did indeed stand up to the crushing 120,000 g-force acceleration and 344.7 megapascals (50,000 pounds per square inch) of pressure as the bullet comes hurtling out of the barrel,? the website reports.

This makes one hope the materials scientists we reported on Thursday who are working on next-generation armor hurry up and get it done.

Octa Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail

Holding a tablet, especially a larger-screen model, can be an uncomfortable and sometimes precarious affair?you have to hold it with one hand, freeing the other for touch input. Octa wants to give you something more substantial to grab with its Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail ($49.95 direct), a whimsically designed, multi-function tablet grip and stand. The result is a surprisingly comfortable, yet somewhat bulky add-on that works with iPads and many other tablets.

inline

Two pieces, the Vacuum Dock is a small plastic dome that's 3.95 inches in diameter and 5.9 inches tall. At first glance, it seems too large and cumbersome, but the size makes sense, as the dome fits comfortably into the palm of your hand, providing a far more natural grip than holding the tablet at its edge with the tips of your fingers. That said, it could stand to be a bit lighter, at almost 6 ounces. The dock attaches via suction cup, with a rubber pump button affixed to one side. A small rubber cap sits on top of the dock, which you remove to add the WhaleTail. The WhaleTail is a quirky black rubber attachment that resembles?you guessed it?a whale's tail. It's moldable, down to the fins, which makes it a simple solution for propping your tablet up at a variety of angles. It's also strong enough to hold that position without flexing too much under normal pressure.

Setup is straightforward: Press the Vacuum Dock onto the back of any smooth backed tablet, give it five or six pumps, remove the cap, and twist the WhaleTail into place. The suction cup requires a smooth back, so any textured device, like the Asus Transformer Prime, won't work. Once installed, the fit felt secure, though I'd give it a few pumps whenever you can just to be safe. It's also easy to remove by simply pulling at two tabs on the suction cup. While it's definitely not the most streamlined option and is a bit pricey at $50, its endearing design, comfortable grip, and useful stand function make it an interesting companion for your iPad or other tablet. At the very least, you'll have a conversation starter.

DARKROOMABOUT DARKROOM

After scattering her mother?s ashes in Vietnam, photojournalist Xandra Carrick comes home to New York to rebuild her life and career. When she experiences supernatural visions that reveal atrocities perpetrated by American soldiers during the Vietnam War, she finds herself entangled in a forty-year-old conspiracy that could bring the nation into political turmoil.

Launching headlong into a quest to learn the truth from her father, Peter Carrick, a Pulitzer Prize Laureate who served as an embedded photographer during the war, Xandra confronts him about a dark secret he has kept?one that has devastated their family.

Her investigations lead her to her departed mother?s journal, which tell of love, spiritual awakening, and surviving the fall of Saigon.

Pursued across the continent, Xandra comes face-to-face with powerful forces that will stop at nothing to prevent her from revealing the truth. But not before government agencies arrest her for murder, domestic terrorism and an assassination attempt on the newly elected president of the United States.

Darkroom is a riveting tale of suspense that tears the covers off the human struggle for truth in a world imprisoned by lies.

Thank you for this interview, Joshua. When we had you on tour before, I don?t think you had any idea at that point you were going to get a contract from Simon & Schuster for this new book, DARKROOM, am I correct?

Joshua: That?s correct. I have always querried my books out to publishers, but for some reason, Simon & Schuster was the publisher I?d always dreamed of working with. So when the Howard Books imprint of Simon Schuster offered me a contract, I was thrilled.

So after you finished your tour last time, where did you go from there? Is that when you started writing DARKROOM, or was it at least in the planning stages?

Joshua: The truth is, DARKROOM was already completed and I?d been sending it out to various publishers, even as BEYOND JUSTICE was gaining ground on the bestseller lists.

I know you must have been thrilled to get the call. Do you remember your initial reaction?

Joshua: I got ?the call? in the form of an email. It was during my daily prayer time in which I don?t usually have my computer on, much less check my inbox. But somehow, this day, while I was deep in prayer, I got this nudge in my spirit to go check on the email which had just caused my computer to chime. Usually, I don?t allow this kind of distraction, but this time, I just did?not sure why.

Well, when the screen displayed my email list, there was a message from an editor at Howard Books with an attachment that simply said ?Happy Monday. Please see attachment.? And when I scrolled down, I saw that the attachment was a MS word .doc file entitled ?Offer Letter.?

Before even opening it, I let out such an excited shout that Kangadog (my goldendoodle) leapt into the air in surprise. I?m glad nobody was home, or they might have done the same. I kept shouting my praise and thanks to God. Naturally, I grabbed my Bible, my manuscript for DARKROOM and fell on my knees just thanking The Lord over and over. I knew that He had plans for my writing. And like He always does, He knocked my socks off with His blessings!

I guess you could say I had a positive reaction.

Take us through the journey. After you received word that S&S was going to publish your book, what was the next step?

Joshua: The next step was negotiating the contract. That took a few months, and I hired a great IP attorney to represent me. It was a very cordial and friendly experience. We all made the necessary compromises to come to a happy agreement and then I was free to announce the big news (almost 3 months after the offer letter) to my waiting fans. I had the biggest number of hits in the history of my website ever that day.

What happened after that?

Joshua: Then came the editorial process. They told me that the manuscript I sent them was unusually well-polished, and for that, I would like to thank my dear friend Christy Giangreco for helping me with the original proof-reading and copy-editing. But Simon & Schuster put another 2 or 3 pairs of eyes on the Manuscript and they took it to another level, doing fact-checking, making sure the accents in the Vietnamese language terms went in the right direction, etc. I?m amazed at the level of detail they went into bringing this book to the editorial level it is now. I?m blessed with such a team of kind and professional editors to work with including: Becky Nesbitt, Holly Halvorsen, Jessica Wong, and everyone else who helped bring DARKROOM to publication.

What major publicity does S&S have planned for your book?

Joshua: S&S is helping me get onto the media (radio, television, public speaking, etc.,) to get the word out about DARKROOM, and to give me an opportunity to speak on topics related to my books. Interestingly, a lot of those venues will focus on me, the author, and my life and career, and topics about which I?m passionate.

What are your plans now? Do you have another book in the works?

Joshua: As I always say, a writer ALWAYS has another book in the works. I have at least two titles I?m completing even as we speak. One of them is by Ian Alexander, my pen name for Fantasy (epic and contemporary) books.

Thank you again for this interview, Joshua. Do you have any words of advice for others who would like to be in your shoes right now?

Joshua: You?re most welcome! It?s such an honor to share my thoughts and experience here. There are so many different paths for people to reach their dreams. But the best path is through finding out what you were created to do and be. That comes through knowing your creator personally and understanding His design for you. Only then can you truly flow in your gifts and abilities. Once you start to do that, you?ll find that even though the circumstances of life don?t necessarily change for the better, you will overcome the challenging ones, and attract the wonderful, fun, fulfilling ones. I would love to discuss this further with anyone who is interested, so please contact me via the social media links in my bio.

Your Online Home Based Business With Network Marketing Internet

Thursday, May 24th, 2012 at 4:18 pm ?

The MLM home based business model has survived for many years and it is likely to grow stronger with the presence of internet. With the growing use of Internet, network marketing companies find a way to grow themselves and build their network worldwide. Thus, Network Marketing Internet Business is born. People start to look at it as the most promising online home based business opportunity which rewards recurring income.

These are the reasons why you should consider network marketing internet business to start your online home based business.

Why I?m NOT excited for Black Ops 2 [Community Post]

Editor?s Note: The following is a community post by PSLS reader Charlie Dove, who talks about his reservations for Black Ops 2.

Well as everyone reading this will know the next Call of Duty has inevitably been announced, and already a fair amount has been said about it. I imagine that many people reading this will be excited for the latest instalment in the long running series, I for one am not, and here?s why.

The first Call of Duty I played was COD4, most people will likely agree that it was a great game, even now I could happily play that game and still have fun for a little while. The next game in the series, World at War, was also fairly enjoyable for me, particularly with the introduction of Nazi Zombies, which was and still is my favourite mode in that game.

Since then however, I just don?t believe that it has been the same, well in some ways it has, and that?s the problem. One of my main reasons for a lack of interest in Black Ops 2 is simply that I?ve lost interest in the series because to me they all feel too similar. It has been over four years now since COD4 was released, and in many ways it still feels the same. I could switch from COD4 to WaW to Black Ops and not notice much of a difference in the gameplay. It?s not necessarily a bad thing, they have to be at least relatively similar after all they are in the same series. You could perhaps argue that Assassin?s Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations are similar in some ways but they still had new elements to them. Call of Duty has had new features as well of course, but underneath it just all seems the same and I can honestly say that it?s gotten rather boring to me, I feel like there is nothing new to hold my interest and right now I can?t see that changing with the new release.

However, that does not mean that I will ignore Black Ops 2 completely, I will continue to read new details about it as they emerge and, who knows, this game could prove to be one that gets me interested again. This ?near-futuristic? setting sounds relatively interesting, and my favourite gamemode in the series (Zombies!) has already been confirmed as a part of the game. It?s only fair to give every game a chance, but personally it?s nothing for me to get excited about.

Well that just about covers it, I hope you guys can see where I?m coming from, though many of you (providing this actually wins the competition of course) will probably be sitting there wondering ?what the f*** is this guy on about??. Some might agree with me, though others surely won?t. This is purely my opinion and in my opinion Call of Duty just isn?t particularly interesting any more, but perhaps that?ll change later this year.
