No need to put Monte Paschi under administration: Italy econonmy minister

ROME (Reuters) - The Bank of Italy's review of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena does not show a need for the troubled lender to be placed under special administration, the Italian economy minister told parliament on Tuesday.

"The regulator has given a positive evaluation of the bank, and so it does not need to be put under special administration," Vittorio Grilli told the parliamentary finance committee.

Grilli said he had not received any specific warnings about the stability of any banks, and did not see any alarm signals concerning the wider Italian banking system.

However, he said that several bank shareholder foundations including that of Monte Paschi had not diversified risk adequately.

Magnitude-6.8 earthquake shakes northern Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? A magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook offices, toppled supermarket shelves and broke windows on Wednesday in north-central Chile, where people fled some buildings in panic.

A 50-year-old woman in the city of Copiapo died of a heart attack, said Atacama Regional Governor Rafael Prohens, who attributed her death to fear during the quake. Authorities said that damage was limited and discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey originally reported the quake at 6.7, but later revised it upward. It struck at 4:15 p.m. (3:15 p.m.; 2015 GMT) and was centered 27 miles (44 kilometers) north of Vallenar, Chile.

The quake shook the capital of Santiago, causing office buildings to sway, but was felt most powerfully in the north where state television showed images of scattered groceries at supermarket floors and broken windows at several homes in Vallenar, Copiapo and other nearby cities.

Witnesses described people running from buildings into the streets in panic.

Vallenar Mayor Cristian Tapia said telephone lines were jammed and some electricity lines were temporarily down but services were slowly returning.

"The first half hour was really tough. We're still having problems with telecommunications," Tapia told state television. "Two walls collapsed. We're evaluating ruptures at homes to find out if they're still safe to live in."

But Chile's Emergency Office, ONEMI, said no injuries were immediately reported and damage to infrastructure appears minimal. The oceanographic service discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

"There's no doubt the population in some places fled, following a culture of evacuation," Miguel Ortiz, national chief of the early alert center at ONEMI. Two lower intensity aftershocks were also reported.

A devastating 8.8-magnitude quake and the tsunami it unleashed in 2010, killed 551 people, destroyed 220,000 homes and washed away docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts. The disaster cost Chile $30 billion, or 18 percent of its annual gross domestic product.

Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

Just off Chile's long coast, the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the continent, pushing the Andes to ever-higher altitudes. The 2010 quake was so strong it changed time, shortening the Earth's day slightly by changing the planet's rotation.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded also happened in Chile, a magnitude-9.5 in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.

'Dazed’ star Jason London poops in cop car during arrest [Video]

Report an error

PHOENIX?-?

?Dazed and Confused? star Jason London has been arrested in Arizona and charged with assault and disorderly conduct over a bar room fracas in which he is accused of throwing punches and later defecating in a patrol car on his way to jail, a police report showed on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old actor, who played the main character of Randall ?Pink? Floyd in the 1993 coming-of-age comedy ?Dazed and Confused,? responded on Twitter that he was attacked and injured and that the allegations against him were false.

?I would never say or do the crap they are reporting,? he said in the message on Tuesday. ?Have faith in me. The truth will come out and you will see.?

?Some guy thought I was hitting on his girl and had me jumped,? London tweeted. ?My wife was in the next room, had no idea what even happened. I hate Arizona.? London is married to actress Sofia Karstens.

Police said London was at the Martini Ranch bar in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale on Sunday when an unidentified person complained London had sneezed on him and the person asked him to apologize.

Instead of apologizing, London punched the person, the report from Scottsdale police said. He was escorted out by bouncers and during that time he hit them, leading the security guards to ?defend themselves? against London, it added.

A 26-year-old Martini Ranch bouncer, whose name was not released, was listed by police as a victim in the incident. London was charged with assault with intent to injure and disorderly conduct, the report said.

?London showed obvious signs and symptoms of extreme alcohol impairment,? one of the responding officers wrote in the report.

Because of swelling and bruising around his right eye from the fracas, London was seen by paramedics but ?became belligerent and started cursing? at them, the report said.

While seated in the back of the patrol car on the way to jail, one of the officers saw London ?lean to the left and defecate in his pants? after the actor complained about the odour in the vehicle, the police report said.

London has in recent years had a number of guest appearances on television shows, such as the political drama ?Scandal.? In 2000, he starred in the TV movie ?Jason and the Argonauts? and in 1999 was in horror movie ?The Rage: Carrie 2.?

eftinasrin: French Day: Faux traveling, a whole new Staycation

I grew up the daughter of an airline family.? At various points in my life my mother, father, grandfather, uncle, older sister, two aunts and two uncles all worked for an airline in one way or the other-ticket counter, manager, pilot, management, flight attendant, reservations, you name it.? In the airline industry, you put up with a lot of stress in exchange for travel benefits.? So, we traveled.? A lot. I grew up with the expectation that every couple of months you take a long weekend or longer to Arizona, or Hawaii, or Disneyland.? Sometimes even on more adventurous vacations out of the country.? After graduating high school I was terrified of the prospect of losing that lifestyle so I went to work for the airlines myself.? But after a couple of years I realized, as previously mentioned, those benefits come at the price of lots of stress.? And, starting out, I made so little money I rarely could afford to go anywhere anyway, even with the benefits.? Skip forward, for this and many other reasons, I decided to finish the degree I had been slowly, spottily working on.? I figured I could get a degree and be able to afford to travel full fare anyway.? Voila, right?

Ha.? Years and years later and I still have the expectation and itch to go somewhere every couple of months.? I get very antsy if I don?t have some change of scenery.? I think that is also why I have moved so much, or constantly rearrange the furniture.? But it doesn?t work out that often, beyond visiting relatives by car-the most 5 hours away.? If we go anywhere that is truly a vacation, it?s every couple of years, and with my parents who we love to travel with, but makes me still feel like a child sometimes.? It requires carefully saving up money and miles. I know some people rarely go anywhere at all, and maybe this sounds snobbish, but it really is an uncontrollable itch.? Needless to say we, or more importantly, I do not scratch the itch as much as I feel I need to, whether the itch is rational or not.

As a parent, I look back on the experiences traveling I had as a child.? How it shaped me.? My travels stirred compassion, awe, inspiration, tolerance and awareness.? I wouldn?t be the person I am today without witnessing poverty in the streets of Hong Kong; the contrast of overcrowded industrial cities vs. the vastness of the desert or other quiet parts of the world; the colors of the Great Barrier Reef, the rich life hidden below the surface of the water, invisible to the rest of the world. The colors of the world.

I want that sense of inspiration and understanding for my children too, even if we can?t physically go far.? Not too long ago I read ?Paris in Love? by Eloisa James and was telling my children about Paris.? They were particularly impressed when I told them about all the yummy food and the typical meals there.? I had them at ?In the summer, sometimes French children eat ice cream for breakfast,? something I had read on the internet but had no idea if it was really true.? The response was ?Let?s go!?? We wished.? To let them down gently I said ?Let?s pretend to go.?? And so French Day was born.

The question was, how do you extract the essence of a far away place and infuse it into your home, a day in your very different life?? It?s hard to actually pretend like you are standing in front of the Eiffel Tower. ? We could attempt to build a model of the Eiffel Tower.? We could check out books at the library and study the country, learn the facts.? But that all feels so schoolish, and that takes the fun out of it.? This is no homeschooling, this is vacation, a kind of staycation.

We were just going to have to be French, I thought.? And what are the French about?? Fashion and food?? Well, I had little chance of luring the boys into the fashion world, but my boys are like men: the way to their hearts is through their stomach.

We would eat.? And through eating, we would experience.? So, I donned my fanciest scarf and skinny pants, a nod to the fashion part, and headed out the door one recent morning to Sweet Life Patisserie.? If the name has French in it, good enough for us.

If the French indulge in moderation, we would too.? We all chose one item, plus one extra, and shared.? A croissant, a cherry chocolate scone, a French cinnamon breakfast muffin, and the very French pain au chocolate.? The boys had hot chocolate and I had a cafe au lait.

Breakfast

Breakfast

We took our time, really savoring each delicious bite, enjoying the rare treat.? We discussed our opinions on which was the best.

Nothing compares to flakey pastries.

Nothing compares to flaky pastries.

We went about our day, going to the library and even checking out some books on France to look at.? We cut these out and used them as a backdrop on our dining room table.

Paper City Paris

Paper City Paris

I made a four course lunch of a simple salad, beef stewed in red wine with a baguette, French cheese (mimolette-like a hard sharp cheddar -nothing stinky!) pears, a French red wine (it wasn?t very good so I won?t bother posting the name) and custard eclairs we took home from Sweet Life.? The paper city also provided some discussion prompts over our long, lingering lunch.? We ate for two hours.? But mimicking the French, we ate so slowly and moderately that after lunch I was pleasantly full, instead of stuffed.? It was nice.

We spent the afternoon looking at books and talking about France.? We looked at pictures of the art, read about the architecture, learned about it?s geography and it?s people.? We practiced speaking French with a CD from the library.? I told them stories my French teacher in college told me.? But really, for us it was all about the French art of eating.? The breaks between meals was intermission, with eager anticipation of what was next on the menu.

Supper was simple, simple for the French anyway: roast beef and crudite with French onion dip, a sausage and bean cassoulet with the last of the baguette, and more cheese, fruit and wine.? We took our time and I asked the boys what their favorite part of the day was.? Breakfast at Sweet Life was the star, and I admit for my sweet tooth as well.? I asked if they had learned anything about France.? They came up with nothing.? Which is ok, because for me I learned that this staycation was more than a vacation, more than experiencing a different culture, more than it?s food,? more than it?s language.? For me, the unexpected learning experience was that I learned a different way to be with my children.? I learned to give into indulgences with them, and to be fully present with them.? Our daily operating status, like many families I believe, is the kids are off playing or reading or whatever, while I am cleaning, cooking, or whatever I need to do to maintain our home, the chickens, the garden, the schedule.? As they grow older, I spend less bonding time with them.? French Day, our mini vacation, was not just a vacation into a different world, it was a vacation from how we operate on a daily basis.? We sat together at the table, talking for long periods of time.? We spent time looking at books and delving into our subject.? For a whole day.

Even if we were actually on vacation, if we truly were in France, my methodical and systematic mind would be focused on organizing our sightseeing, that days plan and the next.? I would be focused on the different awareness I adopt when traveling, in retrospect a rather cranky one, that focuses on ensuring I don?t lose my children in a foreign place and keeping them from making too much noise in a hotel room.

What I learned was how to be leisurely with my children.? Which is funny, because part of being French is leisure.

I also learned that they like expensive cheese.

Former activist gets prison in Calif. for fraud

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A former social activist convicted of defrauding a California charity backed by celebrities Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte was sentenced Tuesday to three years and four months in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer also ordered Hari Dillon to pay back the victims of his $2.5 million fraud, which contributed to the financial collapse of the Vanguard Public Foundation.

The charity was launched in 1972 and distributed grants to a wide-range of social causes, often on the far left on the political spectrum, such as anti-war movements. It funded the first battered woman's shelter in California.

Dillon was in line for a 7-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a fraud charge last year. But the judge ordered the lighter sentence because Dillon helped investigators uncover an even bigger scam operated by Samuel "Mouli" Cohen.

Cohen was sentenced in April to 22 years in prison for operating a $30 million Ponzi scheme that victimized the foundation.

A federal jury in 2011 convicted Cohen of 15 counts of wire fraud, 11 counts of money laundering and three counts of tax evasion after a three-week trial.

Prosecutors said Cohen's swindle began in the fall of 2002 when Cohen approached Glover and Dillon with a high-tech deal that he promised would enrich the foundation and them personally. Cohen told the two Vanguard leaders that Microsoft Corp. was poised to buy a company he launched called Ecast and enticed them and others to invest in the startup with personal and foundation money.

Over the years, Cohen claimed the acquisition was being held up by U.S. regulators and then their counterparts in Europe. He returned several times to the investors and recruited new ones with pleas for more money to clear the alleged regulatory hurdles. Cohen said the deal would die without the additional funds, prosecutors said.

Vanguard and many of its key donors and others invested at least $30 million with Cohen when the deal was exposed as a scam and it turned out Microsoft never had any interest in Ecast.

During that time, prosecutors allege, Dillon siphoned about $2.5 million of foundation and donor funds meant for the Ecast deal.

Prosecutors said Dillon spent the money in the Bay Area's best restaurants, on rooms in luxury hotels and for a down payment on a San Francisco penthouse apartment.

Prosecutors say Dillon readily admitted to the scam when first approached by authorities investigating the foundation in 2010. Since then, they said he has helped them build a case against Cohen, including testifying at his three-week trial. They say Dillon was duped by Cohen and believed he could pay back the embezzled funds once the nonexistent Ecast deal closed.

Still, the judge rejected the government's suggestion that Cohen be sentenced to only 2 ? years after receiving numerous letters and listening to several victims testify about how he ruined their financial lives.

"He is neither hero nor victim," said Cindy Woods, who said she and her family lost their savings with Dillon.

"I am deeply remorseful," Dillon told the judge Tuesday. "I truly and sincerely apologize for my wrongdoing."

The judge also allowed Dillon to remain free for another two weeks so he can give testimony in connection with a lawsuit filed against Cohen.

Jet delivered just 3 weeks before battery fire

3 hrs.

WASHINGTON?--?Federal investigators say the Boeing 787 Dreamliner that experienced a battery fire earlier this month was delivered to Japan Airlines less than three weeks before the fire.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday in an update of its investigation of the incident that the airliner was delivered on Dec. 20. It had only recorded 169 flight hours and 22 flights when the fire erupted in one of the airliner's two lithium ion batteries on Jan. 7.

The fire occurred at Logan International Airport shortly after the plane landed. NTSB said the battery was manufactured by GS Yuasa of Japan in September 2012.

A second battery incident led to an emergency landing by another 787 in Japan on Jan. 16. The 787 fleet worldwide has since been grounded.?

Dutch Queen abdicates, Willem-Alexander to succeed

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch Queen Beatrix, who turns 75 on Thursday, announced she was abdicating in favor of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, who will become king on April 30.

Willem-Alexander, 45, is married to Princess Maxima Zorrigueta and has three young children. Decades of grooming for the throne involved shaking off his image as a beer-drinking fraternity boy whose blunt comments upset the press and politicians.

Beatrix said in a television broadcast to the nation that she was stepping down because she felt her son was ready to take her place on the throne.

A constitutional monarchy, the Netherlands had reduced the involvement of the Royal House in politics, a role long seen more as a formality than a position of power.

In the past, the Queen took part in forming government coalitions by appointing a political mediator, raising questions about behind-the-scenes influence on the democratic process.

That role was scrapped before the last election, which took place in September 2012.

It was widely rumored that Queen Beatrix was no fan of anti-immigrant, euroskeptic politician Geert Wilders. She alluded in speeches to the need for tolerance and multi-culturalism, comments that were seen as criticisms of Wilders' anti-Islamic views.

Wilders' poor showing at the last election and loss of influence in politics, could well have contributed to her decision to abdicate.

Queen Beatrix, who remains very popular with the Dutch, became the sixth monarch of the House of Orange in 1980 following the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana, who reigned for 31 years.

Juliana was 73 years old and in deteriorating mental health when she abdicated but Beatrix has remained active and in good health despite some setbacks.

The queen was emotionally shaken when a man drove his car into a Queen's Day procession in 2009.

Her middle son, Prince Johan Friso, has been in a coma ever since he was buried in an avalanche while skiing last year.

(AP) ? After every plot twist and dramatic turn in the Los Angeles Lakers' soap opera of a season, perhaps their stars' latest identity switches shouldn't be all that shocking.

Kobe Bryant made all the big passes. Steve Nash scored important points down the stretch. Pau Gasol excelled off the bench as the new-look Lakers calmly maintained a fourth-quarter lead on the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder.

Bryant had 21 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, Nash added seven of his 17 points in the final 5? minutes, and the Lakers held off the NBA-leading Thunder 105-96 Sunday.

Gasol scored 16 points in a reserve role as the Lakers picked up the most impressive victory of their thoroughly unimpressive season, coolly maintaining a small lead down the stretch of their second straight win after a four-game skid.

With Bryant taking on a playmaking role, Nash stepping up his offensive game and Dwight Howard preaching togetherness, the 19-25 Lakers are cautiously optimistic their latest reboot will work ? and even the Thunder were impressed.

"We're doing a good job right now of just being real with each other and holding each other accountable," said Bryant, who had 14 assists and fell one rebound shy of a triple-double in each of the past two games. "That makes a huge difference. I'm trying to evolve and find out what we need as a ballclub."

So is everybody else with the Lakers, who had lost nine of their last 11 against the defending Western Conference champion Thunder, including four of five in the clubs' second-round playoff series last spring and a blowout loss at Staples Center 16 days ago. The Lakers have strung together two solid games at home since a clear-the-air team meeting in Memphis last week.

"We've found something that works, that's for sure, and something we can feel good about," said Gasol, who played 36 minutes. "I think the way we are playing, we can be very successful."

Kevin Durant scored 35 points and Russell Westbrook had 17 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds for the road-weary Thunder, who finished their longest trip of the season at 3-3. Durant could sense the Lakers' desperation in their fourth-quarter effort.

"The whole arena felt that way," the three-time NBA scoring champion said. "They needed a win. It was a must-win for them, and they came out and performed well. They were hitting shots, and they were doing a good job of protecting the paint. We missed some good shots as well. As a group, we all have to do our roles better. Every individual has to play their role to a T for us to win games, but we'll be fine."

Bryant and Westbrook briefly tangled in the third quarter in an exchange that earned a technical foul for Kobe. Both All-Star guards entered the fourth quarter needing just one rebound for a triple-double, but neither got it.

Westbrook missed his first eight shots and 12 of his first 13 before finding a rhythm, but the Lakers didn't wilt down the stretch.

"The thought the execution at the end of the game by our team definitely could have been better," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "It's something that we're pretty good at, but a lot of that had to do with their team. They're a physical team, and they were moving us around a little bit towards the end."

Los Angeles took the lead with 6:15 to play on a jumper by Metta World Peace, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers nursed a small advantage in the final minutes, going up 101-95 on Gasol's driving layup with 1:09 to play.

Bryant then hit a tough 19-foot jumper with 37 seconds left, and Westbrook couldn't answer. Durant didn't have a field goal in the final 6:39, scoring just seven points in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma City's third loss in 11 games.

Oklahoma City routed the Lakers earlier this month, with Durant scoring 42 points and Westbrook adding 27 while Los Angeles played without Howard and Gasol.

Howard had just eight points and 10 rebounds this time out while fighting foul trouble and missing eight of his 10 free throws. Bryant and Nash led a passionate effort by the Lakers, whose season-long missteps and embarrassments have left them well out of the playoff picture heading into the second half of the season.

"I'm very excited to see our progress," Howard said. "We're going to continue to work, continue to talk to each other. The biggest difference is we're holding each other accountable for everything. We had a great talk in Memphis, and it's carried over."

NOTES: The clubs conclude their season series in Oklahoma City on March 5. ... Lakers owner Jerry Buss celebrated his 79th birthday. The Basketball Hall of Famer hasn't attended a game this season while dealing with health concerns. ... Derek Fisher, the five-time champion Lakers guard who finished last season with the Thunder, watched from a courtside seat. Denzel Washington, Jay-Z, Alessandro Nivola, Horace Grant and baseball stars Matt Kemp, Vernon Wells and Michael Young also sat courtside.

Obama expresses support in call with France's Hollande

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama spoke to French President Francois Hollande by phone on Friday and expressed support for France's military intervention in Mali, the White House said in a statement.

"The two leaders emphasized the need to rapidly establish the African-led International Support Mission in Mali, as well as the importance of the Interim Government of Mali establishing a political roadmap that will lead to elections and restoration of democratic governance," the statement said.

"President Obama and President Hollande condemned last week's terrorist act in Algeria and affirmed their mutual commitment to countering terrorism more broadly in North Africa," it said.

France sent troops and aircraft to its former colony two weeks ago to block a southward offensive by Islamists occupying Mali's north.

LONDON (AP) ? The Times of London says a secret section of a United Nations report has linked British citizens with Somali piracy.

The newspaper says that a 2012 report drawn up by the UN's Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea carried a secret annex naming a British businessman of Somali origin as one of the key organizers of a pirate kidnapping in 2009.

The Times quotes the annex as saying that the businessman is responsible for "co-organizing hijackings and abductions" and was directly involved in the abduction of Paul and Rachel Chandler, a British couple held captive for 13 months before a ransom was paid in 2010.

Efforts to reach some of the report's authors weren't immediately successful Saturday.

No contact information for the businessman could immediately be located.

Jindal: GOP 'Must Stop Being The Stupid Party' - Business Insider

AP

VP?

With President Barack Obama's well-received second inaugural address still fresh in Republican minds, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal articulated a new vision for the GOP Thursday night, calling on the party to "recalibrate the conservative compass" in order to make itself relevant to today's voters.

On paper, the speech ? the keynote address at this week's Republican National Committee winter meeting ? was a blunt challenge to Jindal's own party, which is still smarting from its meltdown in the 2008 and 2012 national elections. In a four-point outline, Jindal laid bare the fundamental weaknesses of the GOP's message and strategy, and delivered the first real Republican rebuttal to the liberal vision for America that Obama articulated on Monday.

Here are the highlights of Jindal's argument:

1. "America is not the federal government." Jindal's first argument basically calls on Republicans to end their singular focus on federal spending and the deficit, and start talking about other issues.

"A debate about which party can better manage the federal government is a very small and shortsighted debate," Jindal said. "If our vision is not bigger than that, we do not deserve to win?.We as Republicans have to accept that government number crunching ? even conservative number crunching ? is not the answer to our nation?s problems."

This is actually a very salient argument that gets at the core of GOP's message problems. Concerns about the federal deficit were a major factor in driving the Tea Party wave of 2010, and the issues have been central to Republicans since then. The result has been political paralysis and a one-dimensional Republican message that offers spending cuts rather than solutions. Meanwhile, poll after poll has shown that while voters are concerned about government spending in the abstract, they oppose any actual spending cuts.

Here's Jindal's key line: "We must not become the party of austerity. We must become the party of growth. Of course we know that government is out of control. The public knows that too. And yet we just lost an election."

2. "We believe in planting the seeds of growth in the fertile soil of your economy, where you live,
where you work, invest, and dream, not in the barren concrete of Washington. If it?s worth doing, block grant it to the states. If it?s something you don?t trust the states to do, then maybe Washington shouldn?t do it at all."

This is pretty standard anti-Washington rhetoric for a Republican politician with national aspirations, and establishes Jindal as a staunch states-rights crusader who sees federal government as an outdated failure. It's worth noting, however, that Jindal's anti-Washington argument is also a means to an end ? rather than simply pushing back against Democratic spending, he argues, Republicans need to "rethink nearly every social program in Washington," and come up with states-based alternatives.

3. "We must stop looking backward?.Nostalgia about the good old days is heart-warming, but the battle of ideas must be waged in the future."

4. "We must compete for every single vote. The 47 percent and the 53 percent. And any other
combination of numbers that adds up to 100 percent." (Obviously, this is a direct shot at Mitt Romney .)

5. "We must reject the notion that demography is destiny, the pathetic and simplistic notion that skin pigmentation dictates voter behavior?.The first step in getting the voters to like you is to demonstrate that you like them."

While some may argue that this strategy won't do much to solve the Republicans' problems with minority and youth voters, Jindal is taking a direct shot at conventional GOP campaign wisdom that argues Republican candidates will never win the minority vote, and therefore should not spend resources trying.

6. "We must stop being the stupid party. I'm serious. It's time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It's time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We?ve had enough of that."

Obviously, Jindal is taking aim at 2012 candidates like Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, who lost winnable Senate races after making inflammatory comments about rape. Significantly, Jindal isn't arguing for the GOP to give up its pro-life platform ? he's simply calling for the party to pick better candidates.

7. "We must stop insulting the intelligence of voters...We have to stop dumbing down our ideas and stop reducing everything to mindless slogans and tag lines for 30-second ads. We must be willing to provide details in describing our views." (Another shot at Romney.)?

8. "We are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, or big anything?.We are a populist party and need to make that clear."

But while Jindal's prescriptions seemed forceful in print, the delivery was reportedly lackluster, particularly for politician who is already considered a top contender for the GOP's 2016 presidential nomination. BuzzFeed's Zeke Miller wrote that the speech was "coolly-received" by the audience of RNC members. Yahoo's Chris Moody compared the speech to Jindal's first Obama rebuttal, his widely-panned response to the President's 2009 State of the Union address.

"Similar to 2009," Moody wrote, "the delivery may still need some work for a national debut.

Raspberry Pi Dog Treat Machine Dispenses a Treat When You Email Your Pet

Raspberry Pi Dog Treat Machine Dispenses a Treat When You Email Your PetRaspberry Pi Dog Treat Machine Dispenses a Treat When You Email Your Pet Technology seems to be invading the lives of maker pet owners! Last weekend I covered the tweeting cat door that keeps out unauthorized animals and now we have a Raspberry Pi-powered device that dispenses dog treats when you send an email to a specific address.

The NYC CNC Machining and Prototyping shop showcases a device built for the owner's dog, Judd. To build the machine in the video above required the skills of CAD design, machining, fabrication, electrical engineering, and programming. A sizeable list but not impossible for many Lifehacker readers. See the video for the operation of the Judd Treat Machine, and if you'd like to make your own version the source link below offers the full Python code and the CAD model.

You can send Judd a treat simply by sending him an email, but I won't list that here as he'll get more treats than he needs. Go visit the source link if you'd like to send Judd a treat!

The End of Saxby Chambliss Could Spell the Return of... Herman Cain

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss announced on Friday that he's not running for reelection in 2014, which opens the door for a comeback of perhaps the funnest candidate of all time, Herman Cain. Cain was the top choice of Georgia Republican voters in a December survey by Public Policy Polling. Cain, the former pizza executive who dodged questions about sexual harassment allegations by?breaking into song,?was seen favorably by 68 percent of state GOP voters, and was beating Chambliss in a hypothetical Republican primary by 50 percent to 36 percent.

RELATED: Cain Says His Offensive Gesture Involved His Chin

But that's not all! Georgia is packed with politicians known for saying very interesting things. Among the names floated for the Senate seat include RedState blogger Erick Erickson, who was trailing Chambliss 22 percent to 51 percent in PPP's poll. Former Florida Rep. Allen West, known for saying many things, including that?as many as 80 Democrats in Congress were communists, trailed Chambliss 26 percent to 47 percent. Georgia Rep. Paul Broun, who recently said "I think the only Constitution that Barack Obama upholds is the Soviet constitution," trailed Chambliss 14 percent to 57 percent. Though PPP didn't poll his name, let's not forget about Rep. Phil Gingrey, who recently defended Todd Akin's "legitimate rape" comments.

RELATED: GOP Primary: Where Are They Now?

As for Democrats, the man Chambliss beat in 2002, Max Cleland, was the strongest candidate in the December poll. Cleland tied Chambliss at 45 percent each, in part because Chambliss had a relatively high approval rating among Democrats. Whoever wins the Republican primary might not have that advantage. Other Democratic contenders include Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed, former Gov. Roy Barnes, and Rep. John Barrow, who has a more competitive seat after redistricting, but still won in 2012 by 7 percentage points.

and so is the rest of the nation, world - The Medina County Gazette

By Bernard Condon and Paul Wiseman

Five years after the start of the Great Recession, the toll is terrifyingly clear: Millions of middle-class jobs have been lost in developed countries the world over.

And the situation is even worse than it appears.

Most of the jobs will never return, and millions more are likely to vanish as well, say experts who study the labor market. What?s more, these jobs aren?t just being lost to China and other developing countries, and they aren?t just factory work. Increasingly, jobs are disappearing in the service sector, home to two-thirds of all workers.

They?re being obliterated by technology.

Year after year, the software that runs computers and an array of other machines and devices becomes more sophisticated and powerful and capable of doing more efficiently tasks that humans have always done. For decades, science fiction warned of a future when we would be architects of our own obsolescence, replaced by our machines; an Associated Press analysis finds that the future has arrived.

Irrevocable. Jobs that are going away aren?t coming back,? said Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of ?Race Against the Machine.? ??I have never seen a period where computers demonstrated as many skills and abilities as they have over the past seven years.?

The global economy is being reshaped by machines that generate and analyze vast amounts of data; by devices such as smartphones and tablet computers that let people work just about anywhere, even when they?re on the move; by smarter, nimbler robots; and by services that let businesses rent computing power when they need it, instead of installing expensive equipment and hiring IT staffs to run it. Whole employment categories, from secretaries to travel agents, are disappearing.

?There?s no sector of the economy that?s going to get a pass,? said Martin Ford, who runs a software company and wrote ?The Lights in the Tunnel,? a book predicting widespread job losses. ?It?s everywhere.?

The numbers startle even labor economists. In the United States, half of the 7.5 million jobs lost during the Great Recession paid middle-class wages, ranging from $38,000 to $68,000. But only 2 percent of the 3.5 million jobs gained since the recession ended in June 2009 are midpay. Nearly 70 percent are low-paying jobs; 29 percent pay well.

In the 17 European countries that use the euro as their currency, the numbers are even worse. Almost 4.3 million low-pay jobs have been gained since mid-2009, but the loss of midpay jobs has never stopped. A total of 7.6 million disappeared from January 2008 through last June.

Some occupations are beneficiaries of the march of technology, such as software engineers and app designers for smartphones and tablet computers. But, overall, technology is eliminating far more jobs than it is creating.

Sports Illustrations of Gary Patterson

The sport illustrations of Gary Patterson capture our favorite pastimes in images which have the uncanny ability to play havoc with our memories of these popular recreational activities.

It's the sport of hockey, football, golf, tennis, skiing, and fishing as visualized through the eyes of Gary Patterson. Delightful and entertaining this is art designed for those who love their recreation time.

Gary Patterson's sports illustrations have the magical ability to stir our deepest emotions. Art is meant to be enjoyed and his work certainly fits the bill.

Gary Patterson's art leads our imagination into scenarios that are much more than just a little probable to occur. He'll tickle your funny bone and coerce a smile to your lips.

He trudges us onto the golf course and up hilly slopes to gracefully ski to the bottom of the hill. He leads us into the thick of a great game of hockey and tempts us onto the lake to go fishing. Tennis or football? Well those sports are in his illustrations as well.
(Photo of Gary Patterson used with permission.)

We all know that sports can have a tendency to get a little rough. For some it is a natural part of the excitement of the game. For Gary Patterson it is a natural characteristic of many of his sports illustrations.

Love the game, or hate it, you can't help but be amused by a wry twist of humor directed toward it. Football, baseball, hockey, tennis, surfing, or golf, no sport is left untouched by the humorous imagination of Gary Patterson. For sports lovers it's the perfect art work to hang on their wall.

Gary Patterson's father was an artist creating images for the Navy and of the Los Angeles Fire Department. It was by watching his father create his art, and seeing the joy that his fathers art brought to so many, that Gary also developed a love for artistic work.

Gary Patterson plied his hand to creating fine art, and won awards for this venue, but it was the work of creating humorous illustrations which gave him his deepest satisfaction. So he followed his heart and took on the title of "Creator of Smiles".

A great piece of artwork evokes emotion in those who view it and the art of Gary Patterson does just that. His work is a serious attack on the old funny bone.

Great works of art really do not have to be serious to be amazing.

Gary Patterson proves that humorous art can be one of the most wonderful avenues of art to explore...Humor in Art: The Artwork of Gary Patterson.

PFT: Redskins tried to meet fake online woman

bill-callahan-raiders-super-bowlAP

As the allegations of sabotage in Super Bowl XXXVII grew, it was only a matter of time before former Raiders coach Bill Callahan addressed them.? And address them he did, via a late-night statement suggesting that he has gotten himself lawyered up.

By uttering the ?D? word (not the one that ends in ?bag?), Callahan and/or whoever wrote the statement is making it clear to Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and the persons who represent their legal interests that litigation is at least being contemplated.

But while a defamation lawsuit against one or both former players would become great theater, it would entail many challenges ? and cause significant collateral damage for Callahan, and possibly others.

1.? The statute of limitations against Brown possibly has expired.?

When pressed last night by Erik Kuselias of Pro Football Talk on the assertion of sabotage a decade after the game, Brown said that he has been talking about his suspicions on national television and Dallas radio for years.? Which means that, if Brown is sued, his first defense will be that Callahan waited too long to sue.

In most jurisdictions, the statute of limitations is one year.? It has been more than one year since Brown made his statements in a public setting.

I haven?t research the issue completely (which as I learned early in my legal career is standard lawyer code for ?I don?t really know what I?m talking about?), so it?s entirely possible that, in whichever jurisdiction Callahan would sue, each utterance of the false statement sets the clock back to zero.

2.? The difference between fact and opinion.

If a lawsuit is filed (and if it?s determined to be within the statute of limitations), the biggest challenge will be drawing a line between fact and opinion.? False statements of fact can lead to litigation; uninformed or incorrect opinions based on actual facts are protected.

The factual assertion from Brown is that Callahan drastically changed the offensive game plan two days before Super Bowl XXXVII.? Brown?s opinion is that Callahan was trying to sabotage the Raiders.

It?s a fine line, but Brown arguably has stayed on the right side of it.? Even last night, when he was as candid as he?s ever been about his beliefs, Brown said, ?I?m not necessarily saying he [changed the game plan] for that reason, but it happened.?

Rice may not have been as careful.? ?For some reason ? and I don?t know why ? Bill Callahan did not like me,? Rice said Tuesday on ESPN. ?In a way, maybe because he didn?t like the Raiders, he decided, ?Maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.??

3.? Callahan is a public figure.

For ordinary citizens, any untrue statement of fact can provide the basis for a defamation lawsuit.? For public figures, a higher standard applies.

Callahan will have to show that Brown and Rice knew the allegations were false, or that they acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of their comments.? That necessarily makes any case of defamation against a public figure like Callahan harder to prove.

In this case, it means that Brown and Rice would give detailed testimony on what they experienced that caused them to believe what they believed.? They?ll surely say that something different happened before that game than anything they?d experienced in all their years of playing football, which caused them to believe that Callahan was up to something.

Against a private citizen, that may not matter.? Against a public figure, that explanation could result in the case being tossed before it ever would be presented to a jury.

4.? Callahan would expose himself to significant criticism.

If the case goes forward, many former Raiders players and coaches will be questioned under oath.? And while they will have different perceptions and beliefs about the reasons for the decisions made and not made by Callahan, the questioning will rehash everything that happened in preparation for the game, including whether the game plan was changed and why the audibles and other terminology installed by Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden during his time as the Raiders coach wasn?t.

In other words, and as Kuselias framed the issue last night, Callahan was either corrupt or incompetent.? By proving he wasn?t corrupt, Callahan could end up shining a bright light on the notion that he is incompetent.

5.? Plenty of big names will be involved.

If it goes to trial, this lawsuit ultimately could top, from a media standpoint, every lawsuit ever filed or threatened by the late Al Davis.? The parade in and out of the courtroom would be even more impressive than the? Seinfeld finale, with guys like Rich Gannon and Tyrone Wheatley and Lincoln Kennedy and Bill Romanowski and Rod Woodson and Charles Woodson and Charlie Garner and maybe even Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski making the walk to the witness stand, along with members of the 2002 Raiders coaching staff, including current NFL head coaches Marc Trestman and Jim Harbaugh.

Jon Gruden would likely make an appearance at some point, possibly along with members of the Buccaneers defense (which had guys like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and John Lynch), who would be able to shed light on whether or not Gruden seemed to know what was going to happen, and possibly why he knew that.

Current and former NFL head coaches like Rod Marinelli, Raheem Morris, and Mike Tomlin ? all members of the 2002 Buccaneers coaching staff ? also could be involved, along with former Bucs (and current Cowboys) defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

At one point during the game, Lynch told Tomlin, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

Said Tomlin in response, ?I know.?

The biggest name of all could be the guy who won?t be able to directly participate.? If the game plan was indeed changed by Callahan, we continue to believe the most plausible explanation is that Callahan was ordered to do so by owner Al Davis.? It would be fitting if the outcome of the lawsuit turns on whether a jury believes that Callahan was simply following the marching orders given to him by one of the most litigious owners in sports history.

6.? What should happen next.

Though it would be fascinating to cover the litigation and any trial that would happen, the smart move in the short term would be for Brown and Rice to issue statements explaining clearly that they are merely stating their opinions, based on the facts that they experienced.

And then they should never discuss the situation publicly again.

While on one hand the issuance of statements would suggest that they fear litigation, on the other hand it would be a prudent way of both putting a bow on a story that has quickly taken on a life of its own and managing potential liability risks.

Either way, the ball is not back in Brown?s and Rice?s court.

AT&T revenue, subscriber growth beats estimates

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc's revenue rose faster than expected in the fourth quarter as it added more subscribers due to strong sales of smartphones like Apple Inc's iPhone, sending its shares up 1 percent in late trade.

The No. 2 U.S. mobile service provider said on Thursday that it added 780,000 subscribers in the quarter compared with the average expectation for 699,200 from 10 analysts. Most estimates were 700,000 or higher but the lowest was 475,000.

AT&T forecast earnings and revenue growth for the full year 2013 but said it is expecting little improvement in the economy.

While the company's sale of 8.6 million iPhones in the quarter helped AT&T's subscriber numbers it hurt its profit because AT&T pays Apple a big subsidy for every iPhone it sells so it can offer a discount to customers who commit to contracts.

AT&T's wireless service profit margin based on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization was 29.1 percent, compared with the average expectation for 31.29 percent from ten analysts contacted by Reuters.

The company forecast earnings per share growth in the upper-single digit percentage range or higher and revenue growth exceeding 2 percent for 2013 based on strength in wireless and its wireline consumer business.

"Guidance was good but not dramatically good," said Hudson Square Research analyst Todd Rethemeier.

AT&T's fourth quarter loss was $3.86 billion or 68 cents per share, compared with a loss of $6.68 billion or $1.12 per share in the year-ago quarter when it took big charges including the break-up fee for its failed purchase of T-Mobile USA, a Deutsche Telekom unit.

Revenue rose to $32.58 billion from $32.5 billion and compared with Wall Street expectations for $32.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

While AT&T's wireless subscriber growth was better than expected it was slower than bigger rival Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, which reported subscriber additions of 2.1 million on Tuesday.

Sprint Nextel, the No. 3 U.S. mobile provider, does not report its results until February 7.

AT&T shares rose 1 percent to $34.13 after closing at $33.75 in the regular New York Stock Exchange session.

Freaking (and then Speaking) in Public | ASU News | The State ...

For SPM writer Kharli Mandeville, public speaking haunts her despite her ability to animate personal conversations.

My stomach twisted in knots.

It churned almost painfully with the coming anticipation. My face grew hot; it was probably beet red. The blood in my body boiled and vibrated throughout every limb. Tears formed beneath my eyelids, threatening to burst and stream down my cheeks.

I was eight weeks into my second semester at ASU, and I had just raised my hand for the first time in a large lecture class.

My voice cracked and shook. My film professor asked me to repeat my statement. Something about how the cinematography of a particular scene in a film really moved me ? nothing of significance by any means.

I?ve always been described as a social butterfly, and in truth, I am. In personal conversations I am animated and often excitable. And just as any other 20-something-year-old college student, I do enjoy social gatherings.

But force me into a situation where more than maybe a dozen pairs of eyes suddenly snap in my direction ? situations where the calming flow of whiskey is generally and unfortunately sorely lacking ? then I?d love nothing more than to shrivel away.

I?m not exactly sure when the fear of speaking in public began to haunt me ? probably somewhere around the time I refused to audition for plays in high school (I loved theater as a kid) and around the time I fell in love with persuasive writing yet refused to join speech and debate.

At the university level, in-class presentations are a form of personal torture. Teachers ?FINE ? I?ll write that 12-page political analysis whatever thing, but please dear God don?t make me present it to a class of thirty!

It?s common knowledge that to do the job and to do the job well, a journalist must be able to talk to people. But normally, when writing a story, I only need to converse one-on-one with the people involved in bringing that story to life. Piece of cake.

Basically, a journalist spends a lot of his or her time writing. But depending how much they write, it can make one reclusive. Some people may really only know them through print, or worse, super wordy Facebook updates. The problem is, as a writer, they may begin to personify themselves as more eloquent and quick-witted than their real-life persona. People read what they write, then meet them in person, and realize the writer is actually kind of awkward when they stammer hellos and trip over themselves during handshakes. (Uhh, I mean, I?m totally just giving a hypothetical scenario here. I never tripped during a handshake.)

I realize this about other writers and I realize it about myself. But from around the time I choked on my first spoken words in an ASU class, I knew the weird, painfully awkward public speaking thing was something I?d need to get over, and fast.

Last year, I wrote a story on Lawn Gnome Publishing, a used bookstore in downtown Phoenix. I made quick friends with the owner, Aaron Johnson, who has since grown to be one of my favorite local poets. I began working in the store in the beginning of last summer.

In the evenings we host a series of events. Monday nights were, and still are, open mic nights. Thursdays are slam nights. I started hanging around other writers ? particularly spoken word poets. I spent the majority of my warm summer nights, swimsuit tops subbing for bras, kicking it on the porch smoking cigarettes and sneaking beers from the local watering hole. I watched in awe as other writers stepped up to the microphone, light blinding their eyes, shadows outlining their faces, and actually presented their writing to dozens of people.

Slam poetry is about the performance and passion, an outlet that gave way for Mandeville to put aside her fear for public speaking and present her words.

Sometimes they were nervous, yeah. But most of the time they reeked of confidence and just plain swag. I was jealous.

Everyone wants a little swag, you know?

The first time I showed up on a Thursday I was hooked. I?d never heard slam poetry before. I?ve always loved the tradition of old-school rap and hip-hop. To me, this was just like that. (Think Tupac?s poetic flow without the pressure of trying to be hood.)

I?d sit cross-legged, leaning against the beam of the porch. I?d leave at the end of a particularly inspiring night, ride my bike in the mid-summer night heat, rushing home to scribble poetry in a tattered notebook on pages I?d later crumple and throw away.

I kept this routine up for months. For months I told everyone I was falling in love with poetry. That I was going to perform poetry too one of these days.

By the end of the summer, I finally grew enough balls to show up on an open mic night with something to say.

I mean, I was and definitely still am new to poetry, so it wasn?t like, some epic, philosophical call for social justice in Darfur or something.

So I signed up.

What looked like normal ink scribbled with a regular, every-day pen, actually turned out to be my own blood. With my chicken scratch of a signature, I had just sealed my fate. I sold my soul to what would soon become an addiction.

I sat in the audience, hands shaking uncontrollably as I lit a cigarette to relieve the anxiety.

Then I heard my name.

I stood up and dozens of people looked at me. God, why do they always have to freaking look at you?

I shuffled up to the stage, staring at my feet and feeling the finality of my terrible decision with every step I took. Normally when you walk, you don?t pay attention to the fact that you?re actually walking, right? But no, this time, I knew that every step was one step closer to my doom. Everyone was going to laugh. I knew it.

I finally made my way to the mic and steadied my hand around its cool frame (which juxtaposed awkwardly with the heat of the night). I glanced up for a millisecond and a beam of light blasted me in the face. I squinted, looked to my left, and great. Someone was recording. Awesome. I could later view and relive one of the most humiliating nights of my life on YouTube with the rest of the world.

Performing poetry puts a spotlight on the speaker, making him or her feel vulnerable or powerful.?Photos by Noemi Gonzalez, Video by Luu Nguyen?Stop Motion from The State Press on Vimeo.

Well, I decided, I?m already here. I can?t escape now. I spoke and told everyone it was my first night. In fact, it was my first time speaking into a microphone. And as I said these first words, I heard my own voice echo throughout the crowd and into the ears of perfect, faceless strangers.

That was the worst part, hearing my voice that loud for the first time in my life. I discovered I have a slight lisp.

I didn?t bother trying to memorize, the way my favorite poets always did. So I pulled crumpled pieces of paper out of my pocket and began to read.

My hands were visibly shaking. I remember that for sure. Everyone could probably hear those papers fluttering in my small, unassuming hands that suddenly became the focal point of my very existence. I?ll never watch that video footage because I?m sure I?d never do poetry again.

I persevered. My hands continued to shake, but people kept listening. My confidence mounted and my breathing steadied.

It?s all sort of a blur now. The experience seemed like hours of mental punishment, like earwigs digging in my ears to torture me into admitting to a war crime or something. But looking back now, it was probably more like a minute and a half of me reading a silly, albeit halfway decent, poem in front of 20 people.

I finished and everyone clapped. I got a few high-fives as I made my way back to my seat.

Admittedly, that poem sucked. It was silly, and it wasn?t honest. But that?s totally OK. A part of growing as a writer, or as an anything, really, is recognizing the life experience and maturation progress that illustrates how far we?ve come, and what we are able to survive.

And even though that experience was terrifying, I kept doing it. Every week. I still do. And it?s still terrifying. Though I wouldn?t say I made my way past the fear completely ? I did make an effort to change a part of myself I didn?t want to live with, and I keep trying.

That night, I left the stage an entirely different person than the one who choked on her first words in a film class.

And I don?t think I?ll ever be the same.
