Zoologger: The beetle with a handle on its back

Anyone who has ever been for a long walk with small children knows that one of them will inevitably say, or rather whine, "I'm tired. Carry me?" You may even have given in and given the child a piggyback, if only to avoid being thought too feeble to carry the weight.

Termites are pushovers too. Like many social insects, worker termites spend a lot of their time carrying their larvae around. It makes sense: the larvae move slowly, so it takes them a long time to reach their food.

The newly discovered scarab beetle, Eocorythoderus incredibilis, has found a way to exploit the termites' helpful attitude. Not content with living in the termites' nest and stealing their food, it has persuaded the termites to carry it around. It even has a nifty handle on its back so they can pick it up easily.

Uninvited guest

Munetoshi Maruyama of the Kyushu University Museum in Fukuoka, Japan, discovered E. incredibilis in Cambodia earlier this year. He was digging through the nests of Macrotermes gilvus termites containing underground "gardens", about the size of a fist, where the termites grow a fungus that they eat.

After dissecting more than 130 such gardens, Maruyama had found 10 scarab beetles, each about 3 millimetres long. He realised the beetles belonged to a group called the Corythoderini, all of which hang around termite nests.

A closer look at the new beetles revealed that they are wingless and their eyes have shrunk almost to nothing. That suggests that they must spend their entire lives within termite nests, as they would struggle to survive outside. Maruyama says they probably eat fungi from the termites' gardens.

In a sense the beetles are parasitising the nests, but Maruyama says they are so few in number that they probably do not cause significant harm ? they are basically just sharing the space.

Blending in

It seems the beetles secrete chemicals that mimic those of the termites, allowing them to blend in. "They have many gland openings on their body surface, from which chemical substances will come out," he says.

Their disguise clearly isn't 100 per cent reliable, as most of the beetles Maruyama found were injured, with cuts on their legs. He suspects the termites sometimes realise that the beetles do not belong, and attack them.

But it clearly works quite well most of the time. Of the 10 beetles Maruyama found, two were being carried by worker termites. The beetle retracted all its legs as soon as it was touched, and then the termite gripped the handle on its back in its mouthparts.

The beetle benefits from being carried to nutritious fungi, but the handle may have evolved as a survival aid, Maruyama speculates. He says the termite nests are often attacked underground by driver ants, which have powerful shearing jaws and can decimate the termites.

When a nest comes under attack, the termites often evacuate, carrying their larvae away to a safe distance. Evolving a handle may have ensured that the beetles were also carried out of harm's way.

Carpe Twitter: Vatican tweets on new Latin academy

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal tweeted in Latin on Wednesday to urge people to attend the inauguration of, you guessed it, the Holy's See's new Academy for Latin Studies.

"Hodie una cum Ivano Dionigi novam aperiemus academiam pontificiam latinitatis a Benedicto conditam, hora XVII, via Conciliationis V," was the tweet by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi.

The approximate translation: "Today at 5 p.m., along with Ivano Dionigi, we will open the new Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies founded by Benedict. Via della Conciliazione, 5."

It was not the first tweet in Latin - an Italian professor has been doing it for some time - but evidently Ravasi wanted to seize the day, or "carpe diem".

The pope earlier this month announced that he had instituted the Pontifical Academy for Latin Studies, placing it under the auspices of the Vatican's ministry for culture.

Dionigi, a Latin scholar who is rector of Bologna University - widely recognised to be the world's oldest - is the academy's first president.

The pope started the academy to promote the study and use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

When instituting the academy, the pope said Latin, which is still the official language of the universal Church, was the subject of renewed interest around the world and the academy was mandated to encourage further growth.

Paul's GOP plan: Immigration, defense cuts, and pot

Ron Paul supporters might want to think twice before throwing away their "Paul for President" signs. Though the frequent presidential candidate is retiring at the end of the year, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) says he may follow in his father's footsteps and run for president in 2016.

"I'm not going to deny that I'm interested," Sen. Paul tells ABC's Jonathan Karl about his presidential aspirations. While Paul is quick to add that he isn't ready to make a decision about a presidential bid yet, he is not hesitant to say that the Republican Party needs a new message.

"I think we have to go a different direction because we're just not winning and we have to think about some different ideas," says the senator.

Paul says there are ways the GOP can become more competitive in regions of the country that typically swing blue in national races, such as the West Coast and New England, while expanding its appeal among different groups of people, like Hispanics and young people.

"We're getting an ever dwindling percent of the Hispanic vote," Paul says. "We have to let people know, Hispanics in particular, we're not putting you on a bus and shipping you home." Paul emphasizes that border security is still his top priority but adds that he wouldn't "rule out" a conditional path to citizenship for those who have been living in the United States illegally for an extended period of time.

The legalization of marijuana is another issue that Paul points to as a way for the GOP to reach more young voters.
Paul himself does not favor legalizing marijuana, but he says individual states -- such as Washington and Colorado, which both voted to legalize in November -- should be allowed to make marijuana legal.

"States should be allowed to make a lot of these decisions," Paul says. "I want things to be decided more at a local basis, with more compassion. I think it would make us as Republicans different."

He also says legal penalties for marijuana should be relaxed.

"I think for example we should tell young people, 'I'm not in favor of you smoking pot, but if you get caught smoking pot, I don't want to put you in jail for 20 years,'" Paul says.

On the issue of the impending fiscal cliff, Paul says the president's successful reelection does not give him a mandate to raise taxes, as some within the Republican Party have conceded. Paul says he will not vote to raise taxes and suggests that there are other paths to compromise that don't include tax increases.

"How about another compromise?" Paul asks. "Republicans who think military spending, myself, who think national defense is important, should compromise and say, you know what, not every dollar spent on the military's sacred, we can reduce the military spending, that's a compromise. Democrats should compromise also -- entitlements and welfare, the spending can come."

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.?Penn State trustees are set to formally begin the search for a new president against the backdrop of renewed scrutiny of university governance in light of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal.

Trustees are scheduled Friday to wrap up two days of regularly-scheduled meetings with a full assembly of the board, during which they plan to vote on plans to search for President Rodney Erickson's replacement.

Erickson took over the post a year ago to replace Graham Spanier, who departed under pressure the same day Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was ousted in the fallout from the sweeping scandal. Erickson has said he intends to retire when his contract expires in June 2014.

The search process was initially supposed to start early next year, board chairwoman Karen Peetz said Thursday. But the timeline was accelerated and the process will officially start Friday because the potential pool of candidates is tighter than usual, and "there have been a lot of people out looking recently," Peetz said.

"We're giving it a little extra time because as we understand it the field for candidates is reduced," she told The Associated Press after committee meetings Thursday.

She said she was optimistic the school could attract promising prospects in spite of the bevy of issues facing the institution because of the scandal, citing as an example the recent hiring of Stephen Dunham as general counsel from Johns Hopkins. The hope is to settle on Erickson's replacement by next November.

Trustees began meeting Thursday in various committees, but did not take final action on any topics. If the process is approved Friday as expected, a trustees committee headed by Peetz will head the search. The committee will receive potential candidate names from a separate panel comprised of students, faculty and other campus constituencies.

The school is also expected to hire a search firm to help. Board members at a governance committee meeting hearing Thursday in part discussed whether the school wanted to limit its search to traditional, academic-minded candidates, or to look at prospects with more diverse experiences.

The beginning of the search process comes on the heels of the state auditor general's recommendations to reform the university's governing structure because of the scandal that led to unprecedented sanctions against the football program from the NCAA, college sports' governing body. Criminal charges are pending against Spanier and other former high-ranking university officials accused of helping to cover up abuse complaints, but they say they're innocent.

One of the recommendations from the auditor general was the removal of the university president as a voting trustee. The school is still sifting through many of the 119 recommendations made by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who led Penn State's internal investigation.

The University Faculty Senate is also scheduled to deliver similar recommendations. Trustees said they will consider all the recommendations before deciding how to proceed.

In addition, the trustees on Friday are scheduled to vote on a "Code of Conduct" for the athletic department, part of the "athletics integrity agreement" in the NCAA's consent decree with Penn State.

Have you heard the sound of 500 voices singing Christmas music as it resonates through the halls of Christiansen Hall of Music? How about the spirited renditions of Christmas hymns spilling out of the orchestra room every Monday, Wednesday and Friday? If you have missed out on these aural treats, then you surely have heard the ground shake as the 500 musicians make their way up to Stav Hall following Christmas Festival rehearsals.

Yes, the holiday season is now upon us, and renowned folk musician Sufjan Stevens has reminded us of that fact with his very recent release of Silver & Gold, a compilation of songs for the Christmas season. Some of you may look back fondly on 2006 ? the year he released his previous holiday album, Songs for Christmas. If you are in that boat, then you are in luck. Sufjan?s new album has much the same character of his former compilation and takes even more liberty in his interpretations of classic Christmas tunes.

Stevens impressively creates a cohesive flow among popular tunes, hymns, medieval carols and original compositions. Among the highlights of the album is his rendition of the ?Coventry Carol.?? This piece was first performed in a 16th century mystery play based on the Gospel of Matthew and depicts the ?Massacre of the Innocents,? the night in which King Herod ordered that all male infants in Bethlehem be killed. The carol is a mother?s lament, often performed by children?s choirs and recorder ensembles. Sufjan Stevens, however, sets the piece for a chorus of female voices and strings. The song opens with plucked strings playing the haunting melody in canon, which is then taken up by the women. They are later joined by the eerie and melancholy timbre of a singing saw. It is this choice that makes Sufjan?s rendition so effective: Clearly, the song is far removed from the 1500s but can still evoke an emotional response in its listeners.

It was a fine choice of the artist to incorporate little-known ancient music in his compilation, but in order to make it appealing, it must be balanced by recognizable tunes. Sufjan delivers: Various beloved hymns pop up on the album, one of the most innovative takes being of ?Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.? The piece begins with a rag-tag choir of mixed voices, young and old, singing the Christmas classic. Gradually, the musician adds his characteristic spinning electronics and backbeat, turning the reliable old favorite into a fresh and off-kilter, wild piece of music.

On the topic of wild music, one cover on the album sets itself apart from the rest. ?Alphabet? is a cover of Prince?s 1988 hit ?Alphabet St.? Far from the original upbeat version, Sufjan?s rendering is digitized and funky and gives the listener the impression of being inside a Pacman machine with its 8-bit, antiphonal sounds and retro synthesizer lines. Although the song may in no way be relevant to the holiday season, it is an intriguing choice to throw it into the mix.

This Sufjan Stevens Christmas album would not be a Sufjan Stevens Christmas album without his own works. His whimsical character shines through on tracks such as ?Ding-a-ling-a-ring-a-ling? ? a lo-fi song about the birth of Jesus Christ featuring a children?s chorus and crashing, often violent, percussion. Memorable lyrics from this song include: ?Jesus is the king-a-ling-a-ling-a-ling.?

Sufjan tops off his album with its final 13 minute-long track, an original piece entitled ?Christmas Unicorn.? This song is exactly as its title makes it seem.? Stevens identifies himself as a Christmas Unicorn over accompaniment typical of his minimalist style ? strings, cute wind lines and electronics. There really could be no better way for him to end the journey across time that is Silver & Gold.

Delinquency Rate Drops | Daily Business News

NationalMortgageNews tells MHProNews the delinquency rate for government-backed loans inched down third quarter 2012 over the second quarter, from 11.89 percent to 11.14 percent as of Sept. 30. The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reports the rate a year ago was 12.09 percent. Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans late 90 days or more also nudged down from nine percent June 30 to 8.54 percent Sept. 30. With consumers owing approximately $9.4 trillion on home loans, MBA says 7.4 percent of all outstanding mortgages were late as of Sept. 30, 2012, a drop from 7.99 percent a year ago.

20-year-old stroke patient part of growing trend of strokes in young people

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Michelle Nimmerrichter was only 20 years old when she suffered a stroke that left her in a coma and on a ventilator.

She appears to be part of a trend -- a recent study found that strokes are affecting people at younger ages.

Nimmerrichter was paralyzed on one side and unresponsive when she arrived at Loyola University Medical Center on May 13th, 2011.

"She was very critically ill," said Dr. Jose Biller, a neurologist who directed her care. Biller is an internationally known expert on strokes in young people, and chair of Loyola's Department of Neurology.

Nimmerrichter has made a remarkable recovery and has returned to college. The main lingering effect is minor dystonia (involuntary muscle contraction) in her right hand. It doesn't stop her from eating her favorite food (cupcakes) or holding her cat, Cupcake.

Biller determined that Nimmerrichter suffered an unusual type of stroke that was triggered by a blood clot in the deep veins in her brain, leading to massive brain swelling. The clot was likely due to two factors: Nimmerrichter's blood has a genetic abnormality that makes it more prone to clotting, and she was taking a hormonal contraceptive, which increases the risk of blood clots.

Biller treated Nimmerrichter with a blood thinner, and medications to relieve pressure in her brain caused by the swelling. She spent two weeks at Loyola and nearly three weeks at a rehabilitation hospital.

Biller said Nimmerrichter's case illustrates the benefits of treating each patient as an individual. "At Loyola, we treat individual patients with stroke, rather than strokes generically," Biller said. "We avoid the temptation of the one-size-fits-all approach, so pervasive with cookbook medicine."

Nimmerrichter's stroke occurred just after she finished her sophomore year at Loyola University Chicago. It was Friday the 13th, and she was home alone at her mother's house in Brookfield. She was discovered by her boyfriend, who came to see her after she failed to respond to a text. He found her laying in bed, staring blankly at the wall.

Her mother, Mari Nimmerrichter, was shocked when she was told her daughter had suffered a stroke. "Most people equate strokes with people who are 50 or 60 or older," she said. But a recent University of Cincinnati College of Medicine study found that strokes among people under age 55 in the greater Cincinnati area increased from 13 percent of all strokes in 1993-94 to 19 percent in 2005. The study was published in Neurology?, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"Strokes can occur at any age," Biller said. "The impact of strokes can be devastating to young adults, their families and society."

Biller is author of the textbook, "Stroke in Children and Young Adults," and a co-author of the American Heart Association's guidelines for management of stroke in infants and children.

The quicker a patient is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. "But people don't think that children and young adults can get strokes," Biller said. "So family members often are slow to recognize strokes."

Warning signs of stroke include sudden: Weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. Numbness or tingling of the face or one side of the body. Confusion or trouble understanding. Trouble speaking. Trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Trouble walking; dizziness; loss of balance or coordination. Severe, unusual headaches.

A stroke kills 32,000 brain cells each second. So if you or a family member experience stroke symptoms, Biller advises, call 911 immediately.

"Every second counts," Biller said. "Time is brain."

University sports graduate wins Coach Educator of the Year award

Neil Roberts, a sports graduate from the University of Glamorgan, won the Coach Educator of the Year at the prestigious Sport Wales annual presentations.

Neil, who graduated from the University in 2002, had inspired a generation of pupils to actively take part in leadership to deliver sports activities to a range of different age groups through Sport Caerphilly?s ?Coaches of the Future ? programme.

The award ceremony was held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.
The University of Glamorgan had three finalists amongst the ten categories.

In addition to Neil, Rob Griffiths Senior Lecturer in Sports Development was a finalist for the Sporting Partner of the Year and Josh Morris was a finalist for the Young Volunteer of the Year category. Josh, despite studying for a sports degree and working weekends still finds time to be heavily involved in the development and growth of football in Mid and North Powys. Josh has recently completed his 200 hour Millennium Volunteering Certificate.

Rob Griffiths commented on the Sporting Partner nomination ?It is so pleasing to have received external recognition for the work that we have all been doing in the local community.

?Student and graduate employability is at the heart of all of our sport courses at Glamorgan. Many of the lecturers are previous practitioners with governing bodies, Sport Wales and local authorities and, as such, really understand the importance of providing students with relevant work-based learning experiences.?

Nintendo?s New Console Will Change How You Watch Television

Nintendo?s Wii U is better than its enormously popular predecessor in all the expected ways. The new console, which comes out on Sunday, has more processing power and prettier graphics than the six-year-old Wii. But what?s most noteworthy about the Wii U is its new controller. The Wii U GamePad combines the buttons and motion sensors of the original Wiimote with an iPad-like touch screen equipped with a microphone and a camera. This will allow kids to play a hi-def Mario game on the tablet while their parents watch something else on the TV. It also enables new types of gameplay. The gory horror game ZombiU, for instance, uses the tablet as an overhead map, a keypad for electronic doors, an inventory screen for juggling weapons and tools, a crosshairs view when you?re using a rifle, and even an augmented reality display. Hold it up in front of the TV, and it seems to scan the virtual environment and reveal previously hidden items.

Will the Wii U and its new controller change the way people play games? Possibly. Will the Wii U achieve the same level of success that the original Wii did (nearly 100 million consoles sold)? Probably not. It costs more ($300 for a basic version and $350 for a more full-featured version as compared with $250 for the original Wii) and, as Slate?s Farhad Manjoo wrote last year, Nintendo is now struggling to compete with the iPhone and iPad as well as rival consoles. But I am confident enough to make one big prediction: The Wii U will revolutionize the way we watch television.

I must confess that I haven?t seen the TV functionalities of the console in action. (Almost no one outside of Nintendo has?those features have not yet been turned on in the early Wii U units that have gone out to reviewers.) And when the TV functions do launch, you can expect the initial version to be incomplete and buggy. But I?m still going to pull a Nate Silver and bet you 1,000 1-Up mushrooms that the Wii U will push multiscreen viewing to dizzying new heights of input overload.

The most detailed look at Nintendo?s TV plans came at an event in New York this September. Amid demos of various new games, Nintendo of America?s Zach Fountain showed off a service called Nintendo TVii. (That?s pronounced ?TeeVee,? meaning that it, er, sounds exactly the same as TV.) At the most basic level, TVii turns the Wii U?s GamePad into an interactive guide to all of your streaming and subscription viewing services. Tap the 6.2-inch tablet to search for shows across Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, YouTube, your DVR, and your cable provider. You can get suggestions based on your viewing preferences, set it to record shows, or jump in and start watching whatever is available.

As you watch, you can use the GamePad to post screen captures and comments to Facebook, Twitter, or Nintendo?s social network, called Miiverse. (I know, I know.) Nintendo is also promising features like live polls and has started partnering with broadcasters to, for example, provide a stream of scores and stats on the GamePad as you watch college football on Saturday afternoon.

Nintendo isn?t the only company to realize that more people are watching TV with a second screen close by. Shows ranging from The Mentalist to American Idol have started helpfully suggesting hashtags that you should use to live-tweet your viewing experience. And if Twitter and Facebook aren?t TV-centric enough for you, there are a myriad of ?social TV? apps that are vying to host your real-time oversharing. Meanwhile, apps like Shazam allow you to hold your phone up to your TV to identify a show based on the audio, then connect you to additional content about the show.

First algae-derived fuel hits the pumps

Using algae to produce biofuel is something being pursued by a number of major companies, but no one has made algal fuel or additives available for consumers ? until now.

Alternative gas station chain?Propel is working with algal fuel creator Solazyme on a month-long experiment, selling algal-additive "Soladiesel" alongside Propel's normal diesel. The special stuff is 20 percent algae oil, while the "original flavor" will have the usual additives.

Normally the algal version would cost more, but seeing how customers react and watching for supply chain problems is a critical part of bringing it to market.?To that end, Propel, with stations?mainly in California and Washington, will offer the two types of diesel?side by side for a month.

Algae has been proposed for years as an alternative to corn as a way to produce biofuels. Special algae are grown in bulk; when fed certain sugars, they produce combustible oils that can be used as fuel additives. The resulting fuel, biodiesel in this case, produces significantly less pollutants and, Solazyme?claims, may?in some ways actually perform better.

There are serious?questions regarding the ability to scale algae production to millions-of-barrels capacity, but companies like Shell and Exxon are investing billions in biofuels to find solutions to problems like these. One potential benefit: The oil-producing algae can be grown in salt and brackish water where other crops fail, and are more efficient than corn in their production per acre.

Solazyme itself has more than $100 million in funding and is building a biofuel plant in Brazil.?The company's?plan is to commercialize the fuel next year, but limited-market pilots like this one with Propel will make that possible.

Israel, Gaza agree to hold fire after latest round of fighting

After five days of mounting violence, Israel and the Palestinians stepped back from the brink of a new war in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, sending signals to each other via Egypt that they would hold their fire unless attacked.

The tacit truce arrested an escalation to all-out fighting, but both sides remain armed and primed for another round in the unresolved conflict that has festered since Hamas Islamist militants took over the enclave in 2007.

Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of Gaza's Hamas government, praised the main armed factions in the enclave for agreeing on Monday night to a truce.

"They showed a high sense of responsibility by saying they would respect calm should the Israeli occupation also abide by it," he said.

Haniyeh spoke during an unannounced visit to a hospital to see wounded Palestinians. Some Israeli leaders say it is time to resume the controversial tactic of assassinating Hamas leaders.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted his inner circle of ministers in Jerusalem. One of them, Benny Begin, said the flare-up had subsided but the conflict was far from resolved.

A Palestinian rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck a house in southern Israel today, causing damage but no injuries. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"This round of firing appears to have ended and things must be looked at soberly without illusions for both sides," he said.

Netanyahu promised Israelis security.

"Whoever thinks they can harm the routine lives of southern residents without paying a very heavy price is mistaken," the prime minister said in a radio speech. "And I am responsible for us exacting this price at the most proper time."

Israel struck three targets in the Gaza Strip in the early hours Tuesday, including what the army said was a weapons depot and two rocket launch sites. There were no casualties.

Only one Palestinian rocket strike was reported in Israel by 10.00 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET) on Tuesday.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak told reporters that Israel was not prepared to forgive and forget the days of violence.

"The matter has definitely not ended and we will decide how and when to act at the time when there will be a need," he said.

Israel has shown little appetite for a new Gaza war, which could strain relations with the new Islamist-rooted government in neighboring Egypt. The countries made peace in 1979.

But Netanyahu will be reluctant to seem weak ahead of a Jan. 22 election that opinion polls currently predict he will win.

Hamas emboldened
Hamas is emboldened by the rise to power in Egypt of its spiritual mentors in the Muslim Brotherhood, whom it views as a "safety net" that would stop an all-out Israeli onslaught.

The Palestinian Islamist movement believes it now presents a challenge that Israel's military superiority cannot easily best.

"This assault and other assaults by the occupation will not break the will of the Palestinian people and their steadfastness in the face of barbaric Israeli attacks," Haniyeh said.

Israel invaded Gaza in their last war in January 2009, in which 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed. International critics said Israel used "disproportionate force."

Strategists say there is no obvious military solution to the conflict, barring re-occupation of a territory Israel held from 1967 to the unilateral withdrawal of 2005. And re-occupation would be a security nightmare.

Hamas, ruling 1.7 million Gazans, does not recognize Israel and pledged to win all of Israeli territory by force for the Palestinians. Its stance is in stark contrast to the U.S.-backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, which recognizes Israel and is ready to make permanent peace in return for a state.

The gulf between them poses a seemingly insoluble obstacle to the goal of a peace treaty establishing a Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital.
