Google has showcased a new contender for tablet market in collaboration with Asus -- Google Nexus 7. The device makes its entry to a stage where Apple iPad holds the top spot for the 9.7-inch version while Amazon Kindle Fire heads the 7-inch version.
Google Nexus 7 sports a 7-inch display and it looks like Google is taking aim at Amazon Kindle Fire as Amazon's tablet features similar sized display. However, some of the features found in Nexus tablet clearly match with the new Apple iPad. The Apple device has a bigger 9.7-inch display, more storage options and bigger camera.
With a display resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels sporting LED-backlit IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, Nexus 7 outdoes Amazon Kindle Fire's 600 x 1024 pixels IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen. However, it fails to match with Apple iPad's 1536 x 2048 pixels LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen.
There is 8/16 GB internal storage in Google Nexus 7 models, supporting 1 GB RAM which beats Amazon Kindle Fire's 8 GB storage and 512 MB RAM. However, Apple iPad has varied storage options like 16/32/64 GB versions and has 1 GB RAM support.
There is no camera found in Amazon's tablet whereas Nexus 7 has only one 1.2-megapixel camera to its credit. The latest Apple iPad model comes with a 5 megapixel camera and a secondary VGA camera.

Nexus 7's main game changer is the processor as it features Nvidia Tegra 3 quadcore 1.3 GHz processor which dwarfs Apple iPad's CPU featuring quadcore graphic instead of processor. iPad has Apple A5X dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processor. The Amazon tablet features dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 TI OMAP 4430 processor.
A few weeks ago, both Apple and Microsoft held their events showcasing iOS 6 and Surface tablet respectively. In addition to unveiling the tablet, Google revealed a new operating system known as Jelly Bean. As Apple plans to advance its OS, Android doesn't seem to be far behind.
Jelly Bean focuses on performance. More specifically, it focuses on improving UI responsiveness. Google has dedicated a whole project codenamed Butter to improve the performance of Android. Amazon's device has its own customized Android OS version 2.3.
Apple iPad has Li-Po 11,560 mAh battery supporting 10 hours usage compared to Google's Li-Ion 4325 mAh and Amazon's Li-Ion 4400 mAh which give 10 hours backup.
The price tag for new Nexus tablet is $199 for 8 GB version which is same as Amazon's tablet when it was launched. However, entry level of new iPad starts from $499. The 16 GB model of Nexus table is priced at $249.
Going by the comparisons above, the new Google tablet may be rightly targeted to compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire rather than Apple iPad.
Google Nexus 7 is available for pre-order in the U.S., Canada, Australia and the UK and shipping of the device will start in mid-July.
