No new vote in Venezuela if Chavez sworn in late: official

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela will not call fresh elections if Hugo Chavez's cancer prevents him from taking office by January 10, the head of Congress said on Saturday, despite a constitutional mandate that the swearing-in take place on that date.

Chavez is recovering in Cuba from a six-hour cancer operation that followed his October re-election. The socialist leader has not been heard from for nearly two weeks, raising doubts as to whether he will be fit to continue governing.

Opposition leaders may pounce on the issue of the swearing-in date to demand that authorities call fresh elections because of Chavez's apparently critical state of health due to an undisclosed type of cancer in the pelvic region.

A constitutional dispute over succession could lead to a messy transition toward a post-Chavez era in the South American nation with the world's largest oil reserves.

"Since Chavez might not be here in on January 10, (the opposition) hopes the National Assembly will call elections within 30 days. They're wrong. Dead wrong," said Diosdado Cabello, the National Assembly's president and one of Chavez's closest allies, during a ceremony to swear in a recently elected governor.

"That's not going to happen because our president is named Hugo Chavez, he was reelected and is in the hearts of all Venezuelans."

He suggested Chavez may need more time to recover from his surgery. Officials in recent weeks have recognized his condition was serious, and the garrulous leader's unusual silence has built up alarm even among supporters.

The constitution says "the elected candidate will assume the Presidency of the Republic on January 10th of the first year of their constitutional term, via swearing-in by the National Assembly."

It says new elections are to be called if the National Assembly determines a "complete absence" of the president because of death, physical or mental impairment or abandoning the job.

The opposition believes it would have a better shot against Chavez's anointed successor, Vice President Nicolas Maduro, than against the charismatic former soldier who for 14 years has been nearly invincible at the ballot box.

Chavez allies want to avoid a public debate over the president's health because his cancer has been treated as a state secret. His treatment in communist Cuba has helped keep his condition under wraps, and the Venezuelan government has given only terse and cryptic statements about his post-operation recovery.

Constitutional lawyer Jose Vicente Haro said he expects the Supreme Court, which is controlled by Chavez allies, will rule that Chavez may extend his existing term without having to be sworn in with the expectation that he will eventually recover.

"What they are doing is taking the debate over succession from the National Assembly, which is where it belongs, and moving it to the Supreme Court where behind closed doors they can decide the next steps are," said Haro, a Chavez critic and constitutional law professor as the Universidad Catholic Andres Bellow.

Chavez has vastly expanded presidential powers and built a near-cult following among millions of poor Venezuelans, who love his feisty language and oil-financed social welfare projects.

Opposition leaders are smarting from this month's governors elections in which Chavez allies won 20 of 23 states. They are trying to keep attention focused on day-to-day problems from rampant crime to power outages.

UN envoy worried after talks with Syria's Assad

BEIRUT (AP) ? The international envoy to Syria said after talks with President Bashar Assad on Monday that the situation in the country was still "worrying" and gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Lakhdar Brahimi said he and Assad exchanged views on the crisis and discussed possible steps forward, which he did not disclose. He spoke briefly to reporters after meeting the Syrian leader at the presidential palace in Damascus.

"The situation in Syria is still worrying and we hope that all the parties will go toward the solution that the Syrian people are hoping for and look forward to," Brahimi said.

Syria's state news agency quoted Assad as saying his government supports "any effort in the interest of the Syrian people which preserves the homeland's sovereignty and independence."

Brahimi has apparently made little progress toward brokering an end to the conflict since starting his job in September, primarily because both sides adamantly refuse to talk to each other.

The government describes the rebels as foreign-backed terrorists set on destroying the country. The opposition says that forces under Assad's command have killed too many people for him to be part of any solution.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.

Brahimi's two-day visit was to end later Monday. It is his third to Damascus as an envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League.

The security situation in Damascus and elsewhere in the country has declined since Brahimi's previous visits. Instead of flying in to the Damascus International Airport as he did on earlier visits, Brahimi drove to Damascus over land from the Lebanese capital Beirut because of fighting near the Damascus airport.

Reports by anti-regime activists of a government airstrike Sunday in the rebel-held central town of Halfaya that killed scores of people also cast pall over Brahimi's visit.

Some activists said the strike had targeted a bakery. Amateur videos posted online showed the bodies of many dead and wounded scattered in a street. The videos appeared to be genuine and corresponded with other AP reporting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday it had collected the names of 40 men and three women killed in Halfaya. The group also reported seeing photos of the dead bodies of 15 more unknown men.

On Sunday, it reported 60 dead.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's head, said he could not confirm that the attack was an airstrike or that it had targeted a bakery.

Syria's state news service blamed the attack on "an armed terrorist group" ? its shorthand for the rebels ? accusing them of filming the aftermath to "frame the Syrian army."

In the videos, however, armed rebels are clearly among those tending to the dead and wounded.

In neighboring Lebanon, the state news service said unknown gunmen had kidnapped three Syrians and one Lebanese man who were traveling from an area near the Syrian border to the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Syria's conflict has exacerbated tensions in Lebanon between those who support and oppose the Assad regime. Both sides have dispatched fighters to Syria, and there have been some clashes between the rival sides inside Lebanon itself.

UN envoy to Syria on way to Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? The international envoy for Syria's civil war arrived in Beirut on Sunday and planned to travel by land to Damascus to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Lebanese airport officials said.

Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the United Nations and the Arab League, has made little apparent progress toward brokering a negotiated solution to Syria's crisis since he assumed his post in September, mostly because neither side appears interested in talks.

The security situation inside Syria has declined in the meantime, with rebel forces expanding their control in the north and near the capital and storming a number of army bases, making off with valuable arms as booty.

The rebel progress is reflected in Brahimi's trip. Instead of flying into the Damascus airport as he has on two previous visits, Brahimi was to travel to the Syrian capital by land because of fighting near the airport, the Lebanese officials said.

Brahimi did not speak publically upon his arrival in Beirut Sunday.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, said Brahimi was expected to meet Syria's foreign minister later Sunday and Bashar on Monday.

Anti-regime activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since Syria's crisis began in March 2011.

(AP) ? "The Walking Dead: The Game" took a bite out of the Spike Video Game Awards.

Telltale Games' interactive episodic series based on the zombie comic book franchise was selected as game of the year at Friday's extravaganza, which honors outstanding achievements in the video game industry over the past year.

"Look, 'Walking Dead' fans, this is obviously for you," beamed "Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman. "Thank you so much. You guys watch the TV show. You read the comics. You play the video games. You make all this possible."

"The Walking Dead" also won the best downloadable and adapted game prizes, as well as best performance by a human female for Melissa Hutchison as young survivor Clementine and studio of the year for Telltale Games.

"The Avengers" star and shooter fan Samuel L. Jackson served as host of the much-censored 10th annual ceremony at Sony Pictures Studios, marking his fourth time hosting the show.

"You know me," warned Jackson at the start of the ceremony. "Whoever's in charge of the bleep button, keep your finger ready 'cause this is gonna be one heck of a show, (expletive)."

Gearbox Software's cartoony shoot-'em-up sequel "Borderlands 2" swept the VGAs with the most awards, picking up trophies for best shooter, multiplayer, performance by a human male for Dameon Clarke as villain Handsome Jack and character of the year for chatty robot Claptrap.

Other titles winning multiple trophies included 343 Industries' sci-fi shooter "Halo 4" as best Xbox 360 game and graphics; Queasy Games' musical platformer "Sound Shapes" as best handheld game and song for "Cities" by Beck; and thatgamecompany's artsy downloadable adventure "Journey" as best independent, PlayStation 3 game and original score.

"We made 'Journey' for you, to show that games can be something different ? independent, experimental, moving, emotional, modern, inclusive, different," said "Journey" executive producer Robin Hunicke. "That's why we made it."

Arkane Studios' stealthy first-person game "Dishonored" was picked as best action-adventure game. BioWare's sci-fi saga "Mass Effect 3" won as best role-playing game. Valve Software's "Half-Life 2" was chosen as the best game of the decade.

The two-hour ceremony, which featured performances from Linkin Park and Tenacious D, put more emphasis on hyping upcoming games than handing out trophies though.

The show featured new footage from such upcoming titles as "The Last Us," ''South Park: The Stick of Truth," ''Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2" and "BioShock Infinite." It also served to unveil never-before-seen games like "Dark Souls II" and "The Phantom Pain," which is apparently connected to the "Metal Gear Solid" franchise.

For the first time, the VGAs were streamed on Xbox Live, the online service for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. During the ceremony, online viewers could vote on show components like what songs and clips would be played during the VGAs.

The winners of most of the show's categories were chosen by an advisory council, while viewer votes selected character of the year and most anticipated game, which went to "Grand Theft Auto V."

Closer look at consumers' gazes

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Rows of new toys, endless racks of sweaters on clothing store shelves, long lines of books arranged in the bestsellers section at the bookstore. From mall displays to boutique exhibits, long lines of horizontally arranged products are the norm when it comes to the holiday shopping experience.

But how does a product's placement on the storeroom shelf influence which one a consumer ultimately chooses? It turns out that the shopper's eye has a very central focus.

"Consumers are more likely to purchase products placed in the middle of a display -- without even being aware of it," says Onur Bodur. The associate professor from Concordia's John Molson School of Business is co-author of a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, along with marketing researchers at HEC in France and the Aston Business School in England.

Using eye-tracking devices, Bodur and his colleagues investigated how location influences choices for a variety of products, including cosmetics and food items.

They found that consumers would increase their visual focus on the central option in a product display area in the final five seconds of the decision-making process -- and that was the point at which they determined which option to choose.

It turns out that the process is a subconscious one. When asked how they had come to choose which product to buy, consumers did not accurately recall their reasons for their decision. What's more, they were not aware of any conscious visual focus on one area of the display over another.

What does uncovering these unconscious habits mean for the average shopper? Greater awareness of buying behaviours should lead to more informed choices. Says Bodur, "by using this newfound knowledge that visual attention is naturally drawn to the center of a display, consumers can consciously train themselves to make a more thorough visual scan of what's on offer."

When it comes to holiday shopping, the visual equivalent to thinking outside of the box just might lead to savvier selections.

Shake the Nerves: 7 Public Speaking Tips for Inbound Marketers ...

public speaking tips for inboundWe all have our strengths and weaknesses. While I?d like to consider writing as one of my strengths, I know that cooking is definitely not one of them?ask anyone. Some people in marketing may think their strengths lie in their marketing skills, but would readily admit sales skills fall into their weakness category. Why? Most likely they do not like public speaking.

But the truth is, from content marketers to consultants and vice presidents to CEOs, everyone should be selling services on some level to keep the agency profitable, even if it is simply selling the company image. So if public speaking isn?t your thing, don?t sweat it.? Whether you are meeting with a handful of clients or presenting to an entire organization, just breathe deep and follow these tips. And sure, you can imagine everyone in their underwear if you?d like, but, personally, I find it distracting.

  1. Discipline Your Bad Habits: Chances are you commit at least one of the public speaking sins such as ?um,? ending every sentence with ?so? or fidgeting. Get rid of the habit starting now. Ask a friend to raise attention every time you start umming in conversation, or envision a period (or a punctuation mark of some kind) at the end of every sentence you say, so there is no way the word ?so? could possibly slip out after it. Use a tape recorder to find out how many times you slip. If fidgeting is your offense, test yourself: Stand in front a room of friends or colleagues (or a video camera) for 30 seconds without fidgeting. Start over every time you move. Once you have accomplished that, up the time to two minutes and so on until you reach a length you could comfortably present to clients during.
  2. Prep for Success: Show up at least a few minutes early to make sure all of the equipment you will need is available and functioning. Be sure to dress and look like an inbound marketing professional. If it is at all possible, bring printouts for everyone in attendance that include bullet points and any pertinent information.
  3. Make Your Audience Believe You: You must believe in what you are saying if you want potential clients to buy into it. Speak with confidence and conviction. Talk slowly and enunciate clearly without reading from your notes (although you can glance at them every now and then). Try to establish a rapport with the other professional in the room. You should look confident, relaxed and approachable, even if you are nervous; hold your head high and make eye contact. Don?t mumble. And if you make a mistake, simply correct yourself and move on?do not apologize more than once.
  4. Keep Eye Contact Without Being Awkward: Keep your clients and colleagues engaged by using eye contact. Just don?t let it linger for more than three seconds; move on to someone else. Try to connect with each person in the room, if possible.
  5. Be Sure to Listen: Try to get a feel for your audience?s understanding of your point. If they are not getting it or totally disagree, you may need to change your strategy.
  6. Be Entertaining Without Being a Clown: This can be difficult for many people. You certainly do not want to bore your audience, but you don?t want to cross the line to unprofessional, especially in front of clients. Test the waters, and, if appropriate, inject a little humor or tell an interesting story. You can also use images, videos or questions to safely keep your listeners intrigued.
  7. Know When to Stop Talking: This may be the toughest task of all. When there is silence, humans tend to feel the need to ramble on. Don?t! End with a solid, well-thought-out point. Then leave the silence for others to digest what you?ve suggested. And whatever you do, don?t belittle yourself by saying, ?It?s probably a dumb idea anyway.?

After practicing these tips and putting them into effect, you should feel at ease with your public speaking skills, allowing you the ability to step forward to represent your company to sell, sell, sell.

What are your best public speaking tips? Please share them in the comment section below!

Tapping citizen-scientists for a novel gut check

(AP) ? The bacterial zoo inside your gut could look very different if you're a vegetarian or an Atkins dieter, a couch potato or an athlete, fat or thin.

Now for a fee ? $69 and up ? and a stool sample, the curious can find out just what's living in their intestines and take part in one of the hottest new fields in science.

Wait a minute: How many average Joes really want to pay for the privilege of mailing such, er, intimate samples to scientists?

A lot, hope the researchers running two novel citizen-science projects.

One, the American Gut Project, aims to enroll 10,000 people ? and a bunch of their dogs and cats too ? from around the country. The other, uBiome, separately aims to enroll nearly 2,000 people from anywhere in the world.

"We're finally enabling people to realize the power and value of bacteria in our lives," said microbiologist Jack Gilbert of the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. He's one of a team of well-known scientists involved with the American Gut Project.

Don't be squeamish: Yes, we share our bodies with trillions of microbes, living communities called microbiomes. Many of the bugs, especially those in the intestinal tract, play indispensable roles in keeping us healthy, from good digestion to a robust immune system.

But which combinations of bacteria seem to keep us healthy? Which ones might encourage problems like obesity, diabetes or irritable bowel syndrome?

And do diet and lifestyle affect those microbes in ways that we might control someday?

Answering those questions will require studying vast numbers of people. Getting started with a grassroots movement makes sense, said National Institutes of Health microbiologist Lita Proctor, who isn't involved with the new projects but is watching closely.

After all, there was much interest in the taxpayer-funded Human Microbiome Project, which last summer provided the first glimpse of what makes up a healthy bacterial community in a few hundred volunteers.

Proctor, who coordinated that project, had worried "there would be a real ick factor. That has not been the case," she said. Many people "want to engage in improving their health."

Scott Jackisch, a computer consultant in Oakland, Calif., ran across American Gut while exploring the science behind different diets, and signed up last week. He's read with fascination earlier microbiome research: "Most of the genetic matter in what we consider ourselves is not human, and that's crazy. I wanted to learn about that."

Testing a single stool sample costs $99 in that project, but he picked a three-sample deal for $260 to compare his own bacterial makeup after eating various foods.

"I want to be extra, extra well," said Jackisch, 42. Differing gut microbes may be the reason "there's no one magic bullet of diet that people can eat and be healthy."

It's clear that people's gut bacteria can change over time. What this new research could accomplish is a first look at how different diets may play a role, "a much better understanding of what matters and what doesn't," said American Gut lead researcher Rob Knight of the University of Colorado, Boulder.

"We don't just want people that have a gut-ache. We want couch potatoes. We want babies. We want vegans. We want athletes. We want anybody and everybody because we need that complete diversity," added American Gut co-founder Jeff Leach, an anthropologist.

One challenge is making sure participants don't expect that a map of their gut bacteria can predict their future health, or suggest lifestyle changes, anytime soon.

"I understand I'm not going to be able to say, 'Oh, my gosh, I'll be susceptible to this,'" said Bradley Heinz, 26, a financial consultant in San Francisco. He is paying uBiome $119 to analyze both his gut and mouth microbiomes; just the gut is $69.

"The more people that participate, the more information comes out and the more that everybody benefits," he added.

Participants can sign up for either project via the social fundraising site Indiegogo.com over the next month. They also can send scrapings from the skin, mouth and other sites, to analyze that bacteria. Sign up enough family members or body sites, or be tracked over time, and the price can rise into the thousands. American Gut researchers plan some free testing for those who can't afford the fees, to increase the experiment's diversity.

Don't forget the pets: "We sleep with them, play with them, they often eat our food," Leach said. What bacteria we have in common is the next logical question.

Already, American Gut researchers are preparing to compare what they find in the typical U.S. gut with a few hundred people in rural Namibia, who eat what's described as hunter-gatherer fare. Also, Leach will spend three months living in Namibia next year, and is storing his own stool samples for before-and-after comparison.

But diet isn't the only factor. Your bacterial makeup starts at birth: Babies absorb different microbes when they're born vaginally than when they're born by C-section, a possible explanation for why cesareans raise the risk for certain infections. Taking antibiotics alters this teeming inner world, and it's not clear if there are lasting consequences, especially for young children.

Then there's your environment, such as the infections spread in hospitals. In February, a new University of Chicago hospital building opens and Gilbert will test the surfaces, the patients and their health workers to see how quickly bad bugs can move in and identify which bacteria are protective.

Whatever the findings, all the research marks "a huge teachable moment" about how we interact with microbes, Leach said.

Beach Cart w/Wheeleez Made in USA!

This fishing cart is super. There is plenty of room for 8 Fishing Rods! It can also hold your cooler, tackle box, chair and all the rest of your gear. One thing I have heard from many fishermen (we live at the beach!) is that wide wheels are the best and this one has them. Another nice feature of this cart is the adjustable handle-you can make it the most comfortable length for your size.

U.S. says penalties under anti-fraud law hit record $5 billion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Settlements and court judgments under the U.S. government's primary anti-fraud law reached a record $5 billion in the most recent federal fiscal year, helped by cases against drugmakers, the Justice Department said on Tuesday.

The previous record for penalties under the False Claims Act was $3.1 billion, in the 2006 fiscal year, according to a search of prior department announcements.

First enacted in 1863 to root out fraud during the American Civil War, the False Claims Act allows individual whistleblowers to sue government contractors and suppliers for defrauding taxpayers. They can keep a slice of the penalty if successful.

The pharmaceutical and defense industries have been prime targets since Congress revived the law in 1986.

GlaxoSmithKline Plc agreed to the largest settlement during the fiscal year that ended on September 30. The company agreed to pay $1.5 billion under the False Claims Act for improperly promoting drugs such as Paxil - part of a $3 billion total settlement.

"Fraud against the government is not just a problem that affects us as taxpayers. It is a problem that affects us as parents and as patients," said Stuart Delery, head of the Justice Department's civil division, in a statement.

Jim McGilvary Network Marketing Mastery | Anyone Can Be A ...

If a person told you all about how you can start a home based business and eventually leave your job, what would you say? A lot of people try to say that you can work from home. Work at home success is obtainable, but there isn?t one proven method that works for everyone. You will get tips to get your online business going in this article.

Build a work from home business while you?re still employed. A new business takes a long time to generate any profit; so if possible, keep your current job going. Having money in your pocket while waiting for profits to build from your new venture is always advantageous.

Write a business objective in a few sentences to give the details about your company. Include the identity of your business as well as its goal. Come up with a concise statement that describes your company and future business goals in just a few sentences.

TIP! Your office space should be ergonomic. This includes where you set up your laptop or monitor.

Purchasing a ?turn key business system? can make you money, but it still takes hard work and dedication. A home business does not enjoy overnight success; it takes time. If you stay dedicated and exercise patience, one day it will be as successful as you have hoped.

Internet marketing is the key to making your home business profitable. There are many ways to market your home based business online, including article marketing, blogs, forums and email lists. This can increase your company?s visibility and customer base, thereby maximizing your profits.

Business Cards

TIP! Actively seek the support of others in home businesses that are similar to yours. Participating in a group with other home business owners can provide you with your own business network.

Have business cards printed. There are some Internet sites where you can get business cards for free. Be sure to include key information like your full name, phone number and company name. Be sure to include your email or website address. The more options you give your customers for contacting you, the better.

Seek comments and reviews about people perceive your business, products, and website. Find this information by reading reviews, conducting research, or simply asking other people. Getting input and opinions other than your own is a good way to keep up with how well your business is going and what changes you may need to make.

Always set aside some of your profits for tax purposes. Business taxes typically range between 15%-20%, so put away about that much to avoid having to come up with it at the end of the year.

Use something like a flash drive to store critical documents. This could save you thousands in expenses and preserve your reputation as a business. Another backup option is to use online backup solutions like Mozy.

When you are running a business out of your home, you need to make sure to follow all safety regulations, especially if there are children living there. You may have to purchase special equipment, or even invest in slight home remodeling. Your work space should also have clear boundaries. It is also a good idea to set up rules for the household to follow. That way, you can rest assured that your loved ones are safe and that the danger of accidents stays low. Even home-based businesses can be subjected to inspections.

Business Plan

TIP! Ask other companies to advertise your business and do the same for them. You will gain more traffic and higher search engine rankings.

Create a business plan that works for you. This plan may change significantly over time, and you may even decide to disregard it altogether. But a business plan acts as an initial guiding light and a to-do list that reminds you of where you want to take your business. Frequently update the details of your plan as your business evolves.

Keep your work and home life separate by asking your family and friends to avoid bothering you during business hours. Do not be afraid to tell uninvited visitors that you are in the middle of working, whether it?s a friend who always stops unexpectedly or a family member who consistently shows up too early. Persistent visitors should be made to wait until you are done working.

As you have just learned, there are many people trying to sell you on scams. However, as you?ve learned throughout this article, there are also many common-sense tips and tactics that you can use in order to grow your online business. If you?re willing to put in the work, you can certainly be successful.

TIP! Make sure you have a separate business account so there are records of business transactions. Try to have all expenses and orders pass through this account.

Egypt's crisis widens with planned march, strikes

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's political crisis is widening, with plans for a huge march and a general strike Tuesday to protest the hurried drafting of a new constitution and decrees by President Mohammed Morsi that gave him nearly unrestricted powers.

Morsi also faces the prospect of wider civil disobedience as media, the tourism industry and law professors pondered moves that would build on a strike by the nation's judges.

The planned strikes and march raise new fears of unrest, threatening to derail the country's transition to democratic rule.

"Egypt is a big ship in high seas, and no one should stop its captain from taking it to the shore," said Morsi's legal adviser, Mohammed Gaballah, defending his boss.

"The ship must keep moving under any conditions," he told The Associated Press on Monday.

The country's judges have already gone on strike over Morsi's Nov. 22 decrees that placed him above oversight of any kind, including the courts. Following those decrees, a panel dominated by the president's Islamist supporters rushed through a draft constitution without the participation of representatives of liberals and Christians. Only four women, all Islamists, attended the marathon, all-night session.

Morsi has called for a Dec. 15 national referendum to approve the constitution.

An opposition coalition dominated by the liberal and leftist groups that led last year's uprising had already called for a general strike Tuesday and a large demonstration against the constitutional process and Morsi's decrees.

Newspapers plan to suspend publication, and privately owned TV networks will blacken their screens all day.

Monday's front pages of Egypt's most prominent newspapers said, "No to dictatorship" on a black background, with a picture of a man wrapped in newspaper and with his feet shackled while he squatted in a prison cell.

Hotels and restaurants are considering turning off their lights for a half-hour to protest against Morsi, according to the Supporting Tourism Coalition, an independent body representing industry employees.

Cairo University law professors petitioned their dean to let them stop teaching.

"The professors believe they must not teach law under a regime that doesn't respect the law," said one of the professors, Khaled Abu Bakr.

The staff of the Internet edition of the al-Ahram daily marched Monday to the journalists' union in central Cairo to protest what they said was the absence from the draft constitution of guarantees against jailing reporters in defamation cases.

Protests over the draft constitution also spread to state television.

On Sunday, presenter Hala Fahmy carried a white shroud while hosting a current affairs program, according to footage posted on the Internet. She was taken off the air, but not before she told viewers: "We have to tell the truth whatever the price is. We have to carry our shroud in our hands."

She told the independent al-Masri al-Youm daily newspaper that she planned to sue the station.

Morsi's moves have plunged an already polarized Egypt in the worst political crisis since the uprising that ousted authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak.

It has divided the country into two camps: Morsi and his Islamic fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, as well as another ultraconservative Islamist group, the Salafis, versus youth groups, liberal parties and large sectors of the public.

The opposition brought out at least 200,000 protesters to Cairo's Tahrir Square on Nov. 27 and a comparable number on Nov. 30, demanding that Morsi's decrees be rescinded. Protesters have camped out in the square for 10 days and planned a massive rally at the presidential palace for Tuesday.

The Islamists responded by sending hundreds of thousands of supporters into Cairo's twin city of Giza on Saturday. Thousands took to the streets and imposed a siege on Egypt's highest court, the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The court had been widely expected Sunday to declare the constitutional assembly that passed the draft charter to be illegitimate and to disband parliament's upper house, the Shura Council. Instead, the judges went on strike after they found their building under siege by protesters.

Three of Morsi's aides have resigned over his decrees. Two members of the official National Council of Human Rights quit Monday, describing the decrees as "disastrous." They expressed "real fears" of Brotherhood hegemony in Egypt.

The draft constitution has been criticized for not protecting the rights of women and minority groups. Critics say it empowers Islamic religious clerics by giving them a say over legislation, while some articles were seen as tailored to get rid of Islamists' enemies.

The draft has a new article that seeks to define the principles of Islamic law by pointing to theological doctrines and their rules. Another new article states that Egypt's most respected Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, must be consulted on any matters related to Shariah law, a measure critics fear could lead to oversight of legislation by clerics.

Rights groups have said that virtually the only references to women relate to the home and family, that the new charter uses overly broad language with respect to the state protecting "ethics and morals," and that it fails to outlaw gender discrimination.

In the past two days, social networks featured a widely circulated photo-shopped picture of the constituent assembly's Islamist chairman, Hossam al-Ghiryani, handing Morsi a copy of the draft. The cover of the document had an image of Mickey Mouse.

The powerful judges' union said Sunday that they would not oversee the referendum, as is customary ? a move that would raise questions on the vote's legitimacy.

On Monday, however, the powerful Supreme Judiciary Council agreed to oversee the voting in a step that legal experts described as "routine."

In addition, Egypt's electoral commission, which is led by senior judges, was forced by law to hold a meeting Sunday to discuss preparations for the referendum.

Gaballah, Morsi's legal adviser, said the election commission held the meeting to organize the referendum. The state-owned Al-Akhbar daily ran a front page photo of the senior judges at the meeting, and Gaballah said that the judges will oversee the vote.

But Yousseri Abdel-Karim, a judge and a former spokesman of the electoral commission, said its mission is purely administrative, and the meeting did not mean that judges are going to oversee the referendum.

"Judges don't retreat and we fear nothing, and we will not change our position," he said.

Opposition figures have raised concerns about referendums because in past votes, large numbers of Egyptian voters ? many of them illiterate ? were easily swayed by Islamists who used religious sentiment to influence the outcomes.

With little time left before the vote, the opposition has yet to come up with a strategy for the referendum. It could try to besiege the headquarters of the election commission. Or it could try to rally supporters to vote "no."

Curcumin's ability to wage war on cancer stem cells further verified ...

(NaturalNews) Promising new research has demonstrated once again that the ingredient curcumin, which is the principal curcuminoid of the widely used Indian spice turmeric, a member of the ginger family, is a major cancer fighter, this time proving effective against esophageal cancer.

According to researchers at the University of Kansas' Cancer Center and Medical Center, study results indicate that "curcumin inhibits the growth of esophageal cancer cell lines," though how it works "is not well understood."

The results of the study are especially noteworthy given that esophageal cancer is the eighth most common type of cancer in the world and the sixth most lethal.

This 'novel' cancer treatment works wonders

In the U.S. alone, between four and 10 persons for every 100,000 die from esophageal cancer every year. The disease mostly strikes men over the age of 50, according to published statistics.

In 2011, the American Cancer Society estimated that 16,980 Americans (13,450 men and 3,530 women) were diagnosed with the disease. The organization also estimated that a majority of those diagnosed with esophageal cancer - about eight in 10 - would die.

"Esophageal adenocarcinoma, the major form of esophageal cancer in the U.S., is the most rapidly rising cancer in the western world," said a summary of the study's results. "It is generally diagnosed at a late stage and has a poor prognosis, with a five-year survival of less than 10 percent."

"Although the current treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and, if possible, esophagogastric resection, many patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma experience progression of disease despite such treatment, suggesting that such tumors are resistant to standard therapy," the summary said.

Enter curcumin therapy. Other "novel" forms of treatment and therapy have not proven as effective, say researchers, especially in patients who have advanced cancer.

"The magnitude of this problem mandates the need for novel therapeutic agents, specifically the use of agents for chemoprevention. This is most attractive for esophageal adenocarcinoma since a pre-malignant condition, Barrett's esophagus, is a well-recognized lesion," says the summary.

In short, a common form of cancer that is resistant to current standard treatments is being bested by treatment with an age-old spice.

"Curcumin seems to have multiple molecular targets and its enhanced potency in cancer in various cancer cell lines and xenograft tumors renders it a strong candidate for therapeutic applications for esophageal cancer as well as other cancers and inflammatory disease states," said the study.

Dramatic reductions in the spread of cancer

Previous research has also found that curcumin - and its primary element, turmeric - have been found to reduce cancer growth and brain tumors as much as 81 percent.

"Used by ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, curcumin has been shown to reduce brain tumor size by 81 percent in 9 out of 11 studies," say researchers from the University of California-Los Angeles.

"Turmeric and curcumin are both extremely cheap methods of boosting your health, and are readily available almost worldwide," said Mike Barrett, co-founder of alternative health organization, Natural Society. "The ubiquitous nature of turmeric both in the form of supplementation and spice sets up turmeric to be the next vitamin D over the next few years. As more medical professionals begin to recognize the benefits of turmeric and curcumin, a major media blitz will follow as it did regarding the multiple known effects of vitamin D."

In the UCLA study, 21 participants who had contracted head and neck cancer saw the spread of their disease halted after being given chewable supplements containing 1,000 mg of curcumin each.

"Curcumin, the main component in the spice turmeric, suppresses a cell signaling pathway that drives the growth of head and neck cancer, according to a pilot study using human saliva by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center," the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, said, confirming the university's results.

Will Santa Show Up for Stock Market Investors? | Wall St. Cheat Sheet

U.S. equities, ETFs seek higher ground as December starts and investors wonder if Santa will show up for the traditional year end ?Santa Rally?

U.S. equities and ETFs were mostly flat on Friday as November drew to a close.

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSEARCA:DIA) gained 0.1%, the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) added o.5% for the week and the Nasdaq 100 ETF (NYSEARCA:QQQ) added 1.4% from last Friday?s close.? The Russell 2000 (NYSEARCA:IWM) also put in a good week with a gain of 2.1%.

For November, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSEARCA:DIA) declined 0.5%, the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) gained 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite (NYSEARCA:QQQ) added 1.1%.

In the chart of the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) above, we can see how the index has reclaimed its 200 day moving average and broken through resistance at the 1400 level which has been a major battleground for the last few weeks.? Next major resistance levels are at the blue 50 day moving average and recent highs between 1430-1460, with the upper band just 3% from today?s levels.

The S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:SPY) will have to break through these levels to reestablish its uptrend, however, the index has already reclaimed most of the ground lost since the beginning of the correction in early October.

As we enter December, the topic of the seasonal ?Santa Rally? comes into view and the fiscal cliff could put Santa in jeopardy this year which could be bad news for stocks and ETFs because as famed investor Yale Hirsch said, ?if Santa fails to call, bears may come to Broad and Wall.?

ETF News You Can Really Use

The fiscal cliff continues making daily headlines and we can expect more volatility and jousting around that subject during the upcoming week.? It was the? major topic of discussion on the Sunday talk shows as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said tax increases for the top 2% of Americans were mandatory for a deal on the fiscal cliff.

Geithner said Republicans in Congress will be responsible for hurting the economy if they refuse to raise tax rates on the highest-income earners as part of a deal.? He challenged the Republicans to not raise taxes on most Americans to protect the top 2% and Speaker of the House John Boehner said negotiations were getting nowhere, describing the situation as a ?stalemate.?

Most stock and ETF investors still expect a deal to be reached, however, both sides appear to be digging in around their sacred cow issues of tax hikes for the top 2% and government spending cuts, particularly in the area of entitlements.? So while big stock and ETF investors expect a settlement, clearly the chance of ?going over the cliff? grows with each passing day.

President Obama is looking for more than $1.5 trillion in tax hikes, along with spending cuts, while Republicans are pushing for spending cuts in Social Security and Medicare, along with tax reform.

Farther down the road, lies another round of contentious negotiations over raising the debt ceiling which was an unhappy exercise in 2011 that resulted in setting the stage for this month?s fiscal cliff debate.

Investing Insights to Explore Now: ETF Trading Signals>>

Twenty nine days remain to the fiscal cliff, however, even more pressing is the fact that just 8 days are on the calendar when both houses of Congress are in session between now and the start of the Christmas recess on December 17th.

In other news, the European Union kicked the can farther down the road regarding Greece, giving the beleaguered island nation until 2020 to reduce its debt to 120% of GDP.? The country will try to buy back its own bonds starting on Monday, December 3rd, and so the ?Greek Tragedy? continues with high unemployment and a severe recession.

Late Friday in little reported news, Moody?s downgraded the European Stability Mechanism and European Financial Stability Facility, the two? main bailout funds for Europe, and this could put more pressure on the Euro (NYSEARCA:FXE) which has recently been in rally mode.

In the United States, economic reports were mostly positive as Q3 GDP was revised upwards to 2.7% and the Richmond and Chicago PMI reports moved into expansion territory.? The housing market also posted some positive economic reports with the Case/Shiller Home Price Index rising, pending home sales up and consumer confidence gaining a fraction.

On the downside, jobless claims came in higher than expected and the Fed regions covering Dallas and Kansas City reported those regions in economic contraction.

Personal spending fell 0.2% in October, the first decline since last spring, and income was stagnant and still suffering the effects of Hurricane Sandy, while new home sales missed expectations.

Next week brings a storm of important data including ISM and construction spending on Monday, ADP employment and factory orders on Wednesday, weekly jobless claims on Thursday and the all important November Non Farm Payroll and Unemployment reports due Friday, all of which could move stocks and ETFs.

Bottom line:? Market participants appear to want to push major U.S. stocks and ETFs higher to close the year, however, going over the fiscal cliff could derail the widely anticipated Santa Rally.??

Highest Employment Growth In Texas - Business Insider

This month, America celebrates (hurrah) five years since the onset of the Great Recession.

Earlier this week, the Bureau of Labour Statistics released the latest employment data for American metropolitan areas, and I thought I'd see where employment has managed to rise above the pre-recession peak. And where it hasn't.

bls change in employment chart

The chart looks at the ten best and ten worst performers, in percentage terms, among large metropolitan areas (those with at least 500,000 in total employment).

One thing that immediately stands out is how few metropolitan areas have surpassed their pre-recession peaks.

New Orleans makes the top ten list, and it basically has the same number of people working now as in 2007. Looking at all metropolitan areas (and not just large ones) only about one in four have regained or surpassed their previous peak.

The second thing that stands out is Texas. The focus on just the very top of the league table for large metro areas actually understates the performance of the Lone Star State. Looking at all metropolitan areas, 8 of the top 20 and 17 of the top 50 metros, in terms of percentage employment growth, are in Texas.

California represents the flip side of the coin. Three of the bottom ten metro areas are in California. And the Los Angeles metropolitan area is the single worst performer in absolute terms; employment there is 366,000 jobs short of the December 2007 level.

But: California is catching up. In the year to October, the state of California added more jobs than any other state, including 20,000 more than Texas. Los Angeles added just under 80,000; good news, but there is a ways to go to claw back all of the lost ground.

One can sum up the performance at the poles of the distribution pretty simply. The top represents energy, brains, and Texas; the bottom, housing and manufacturing. The good news for California is that housing is no longer a drag and brains are increasingly dominating other negative effects. Lurking just outside the top ten are Boston (12), Raleigh (14), Baltimore (17), and Seattle (21).?

Still, it's worth reflecting on Texas' performance. Energy has something to do with it, of course. So, too, does Texas' relatively stringent mortgage rules, which helped to prevent the wave of bad loans that struck economies in bubble states (like California and Florida) and non-bubble states (like Georgia) alike.

I think it's worth emphasizing Texas' extraordinary population growth, and the way in which that growth kept the state's economy in a positive output growth equilibrium. Some might complain that not every state can duplicate Texas' success in this fashion; not everyone can prosper by attracting migrants from other parts of the country.

That's true. But in a world in which millions of skilled foreigners would love to become American residents, every state can be a little Texas.

Kuwait's rifts highlighted by election boycott

Islamist, nationalist and liberal opposition groups gather to protest the Kuwait government's amendment of the electoral law and support a boycott on the country's election on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 in Kuwait City. More than 15,000 protesters rallied in the first government-authorized demonstration in Kuwait since a ban on political gatherings earlier this month. (AP) ? Kuwait's deep political rifts took center stage in parliamentary elections Saturday as backers of the ruling establishment cast ballots while a broad opposition alliance staged a boycott and vowed to reject the outcome.

The voting capped months of political upheavals and showdowns in the oil-rich Gulf state ? a strategic Western ally ? and the polarized atmosphere suggested more tensions ahead.

Kuwait has the Gulf's most politically powerful parliament and the election is certain to restore control to pro-government lawmakers. Yet that doesn't guarantee any extra breathing space for the ruling system amid claims it is overstepping its powers.

A wide-reaching coalition of opposition factions - ranging from hardline Islamists to Western-leaning liberals - already has challenged the legitimacy of the new parliament because of the boycott and could increasingly take their grievances to the streets.

Kuwait has largely escaped the unrest sweeping the region, and any potential for greater unrest is closely watched by Washington, which has thousands of U.S. ground forces in Kuwait as part of the Pentagon's military counterweight to Iran in the Persian Gulf.

Islamists and tribal allies won control of the 50-seat parliament in February elections, but the chamber was later dissolved over a legal challenge by the ruling establishment over electoral districts. Kuwait has been left without an effective working parliament for more than five months.

Complaints against authorities include increasing efforts to muzzle free speech and failure to have Kuwait's economy and growth keep pace with other dynamic Gulf centers such as Qatar's capital Doha and the United Arab Emirates' hubs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Last month, four people were arrested on charges of insulting Kuwait's emir in Twitter posts.

Security forces watched over polling stations across Kuwait, but no disturbances were reported and the full 12-hour voting period was held. The voting sites vividly displayed the country's divides with pro-government areas showing steady turnout, but areas loyal to the opposition were almost deserted. Boycott backers tied pieces of orange ribbon - the adopted color of the opposition - around tree branches near some polling sites.

Some opposition groups predicted turnout could be well below 50 percent, compared with near 60 percent for the last parliamentary elections in February that were won by Islamists and their allies.

"I'm certain that the boycott will have an effect on the turnout," said Information Minister Mohammad al-Abdullah Al Sabah, a member of the ruling family.

He appealed, however, for the opposition to confine their objections within the country's "legal framework."

The anti-government groups have bitterly denounced a decree in October by Kuwait's emir to end an unusual balloting system that allowed four choices per voter.

Critics claim the new one-vote-per-person rule will make it easier for state authorities to potentially influence the outcome. They also say the emir went beyond his authority by changing the voting rules without public debate.

On the eve of the election, more than 15,000 people joined a peaceful pro-boycott march in the first rally permitted by authorities since a ruling last month banning gatherings of more than 20 people.

Kuwait's parliament has the most powers of any among the Gulf Arab states. Opposition lawmakers have often fired off accusations of corruption and abuses against government officials, including the prime minister and other members of the ruling family.

The country also has some of the widest political and media freedoms in the region, but key government posts and policies remain under the control of the ruling family.

Yet Islamists and their backers also worry many Kuwaitis for open support of stricter Muslim codes such as censoring artists and imposing death sentences for those convicted of denigrating Islam.

The concerns about the rising clout of Islamists also reflects wider battles across the Gulf as authorities crack down on groups suspected of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which has taken control of Egypt following elections in the past year. Gulf leaders view activists inspired by the Arab Spring as potential threats, but Kuwait's Islamist leaders claim they are a homegrown force that only seeks a greater say in the country's affairs.

A 29-year-old voter, Ali Boushehri, said he was frustrated with both sides.

"I hold the government accountable for many of our shortcomings in Kuwait, and that is why I am voting," he said. "I don't agree with the opposition. Boycotting is not a good thing to do ... I want to vote because I believe in democracy."

A businessman, Khaled al-Qahtani, 38, decided to join the boycott even though he also has misgivings about Islamists. Many liberals have joined the unusual alliance of convenience with Islamists over their shared anger against the ruling system, but remain far apart on ideology.

Islamists and their backers "aren't to be trusted with the future of Kuwait, so I don't support them," said al-Qahtani. "Although, sadly, the government lost the support of many others by failing the people repeatedly."

The region's popular uprisings have not spilled over to Kuwait in a major way as in nearby Bahrain, and it remains unlikely opposition groups would wage an all-out challenge to the current system and risk losing the generous cradle-to-grave benefits provided by the state.

But clashes last month between protesters and security forces displayed the potential for violence to escalate.

Kuwait also was hit by a wave of labor unrest and strikes earlier this year, including walkouts that grounded the state carrier, Kuwait Airways, and temporarily closed customs posts and left several hundred trucks stranded at the border.

Calls for better working conditions have grown louder in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings. Kuwaitis are used to well-paid government jobs and benefits that increasingly have become a burden on state finances despite the country's huge oil wealth.
